in an AP track by track thing, this is what max bemis said the song was about:
"It's about a college-age girl who is infatuated with a college-age guy who doesn't love her at all but sleeps with her all the time. So she finds an easier, more submissive guy to use to make this other guy jealous. It's a terrible love triangle. In society, we see this happen all the time. I've seen this happen so many times: people pursue what is not healthy, including myself when I was younger. I could have played any of these roles in my life. We pursue that which is not healthy for us or gives us what we want. It's what seems viable based on what society's standards are, such as being attractive. In reality, it is just a lie that we're pursuing and we are willing to hurt anyone to get that. In that process, everyone gets really screwed over. Even though society says this is dating, this is what it's about: people get jealous of each other and people date people they don't like that much. All of these things are acceptable in society, but they are demeaning and make people feel terrible. I wanted this song to illuminate what we think is normal for your love life is actually sometimes a really destructive process."
I think the song is about a girl who was in a bad relationship and is now in a new one, but still pines after he abusive boyfriend [i miss the day you spit on me] except this dude isn't perfect either...apparently he brags about his band & makes snide remarks about her poetry? and then eventually her ex comes back to town and she leaves her new boyfriend to meet him.
But that's just a guess.

Probably my 2nd favorite off of the new album. I love the beginning.
Can anyone analyze what it means?
The song is with the theme of the album: settling for less than what is actually your potential. The girl is with a guy that pales in comparison to what she really wants.
I saw it as a guy who wants a girl who is already taken, and in the song he speaking with her boyfriend. The boyfriend is putting him down but he hangs around because he can sorta feel the girl in the boyfriend, like a less cute and cheap version of her.

is what's being sung in the background at the end
but teh biggest thin about this song that strikes me if that interview is real, is that max wrote a song from adifferent prespective. i think thats great but its very different from recent songs but tis refreshing
I think it's pretty stellar how Max switched perspectives to write this song. That's a great song-writing device, but I'm glad that it didn't suffer to lose any of his personal flair. It's nice to see Say Anything mature while remaining true to themselves musically. This album is fantastic.
