Location Lyrics

I am starting to sense your location
You are somewhere in the attic
Looking something close to tragic
Dating t-shirts and your mattress
I'm floating on the stairwell
With my toes grazed in the cedar
Thinking softly would a tender box leave them in

And what a flammable heart I've been given
You could be in several different places
I am sensing your location

I am starting to sense your location
You are somewhere in the basement
Beating on a makeshift drum kit
Songs that I can hardly stomach
I'm floating on the stairwell
With my fingers shaking frantic
Thinking softly what a concrete mess we live in

And what a ice box heart I've been given
You could be in several different places
I am sensing your location

You could be in several different places
I am starting to sense your locale now

I am to starting to sense your location
In an old, abandoned mansion
In a country side of England
Spirits trapped inside the linens
And you're feeling quite at home there
Also feeling somewhat lonely
No one sees you in your pixelated fish nets
And your black and orange beret

You could be in several different places
I am sensing your location
You could be in several different places
I am starting to sense your locale now

Oh please believe the ghost in me
Is doing what I can to find you out

"I'm floating on the stairwell With my toes grazing the cedar Thinking softly what a tinder box we live in...

And what a flammable heart I've been given"

Makes a lot more sense.

I have no idea about the "Dating t-shirts and your mattress" Bit, im sure its not that, but its really hard to tell what it is.

Good job though :)

It's not much, but I'm getting 'knitting t shirts' rather than dating them :-)

The line you're talking about - "Knitting t-shirts into madras"

Good call on the tinder box bit.

"You are somewhere in the attic Looking something close to tragic Dating t-shirts and your mattress I'm floating on the stairwell With my toes grazed in the cedar Thinking softly would a tender box leave them in...": To me, this means the girl he loves is kind of a lost, tragic mess that's alone, and he wants to go and save her.

"And what a flammable heart I've been given": He has a heart that sparks a relationship between he and a girl.

"You can be in several different places, I am sensing your location": He is thinking about her a lot, even when she's gone

"You are somewhere in the basement Beating on a makeshift drum kit Songs that I can hardly stomach I'm floating on the stairwell With my fingers shaking frantic Thinking softly what a concrete mess we live in...": He broke up with her, he hears songs that remind him of her, he can't stand the concrete mess of the world he lives in because he is so sad it ended between he and the girl.

"What an icebox heart i've been given": He feels he has a cold heart for breaking up with her.

"I am to starting to sense your location In an alternate dimension In a country side of England Spirits trapped inside the linens And you're feeling quite at home there Also feeling somewhat lonely No one sees you in your pixelated fish nets And your black and orange beret": He is "sensing her location" aka, thinking about her. He is coming up with ideas of where she is (alternate dimension, country side of England) what she is doing/how she is feeling (quite at home there, but also missing him too) and how life is living without her. He is still thinking about her even though life is moving on.

"Oh please believe the ghost in me Is doing what I can to find you out": Somewhere deep down inside, he wants her back and misses her.

My Interpretation

"I am to starting to sense your location In an alternate dimension In a country side of England"

The "In an alternate dimension" bit sounds more like "In an old, abandoned mansion" to me.

It's "in an old abandoned mansion in a countryside of England"

I believe it's "my toes grazing the cedar" because he's floating up the stairs (like a ghost).

I think I read that this album is about the narrator's relationship with a ghost. To me that's clearly what this song is about specifically. I absolutely adore this song - it's probably one of my favorites off the album. It's so lovely :)

I also believe it's "up the stairwell" not "on"

This is my interpretation. Think of it what you may but here it it:

"I am starting to sense your location You are somewhere in the attic Looking something close to tragic Knitting t-shirts into madras* I'm floating on the stairwell With my toes grazing the cedar Thinking softly what a tinder box we live in...

And what a flammable heart I've been given You could be in several different places I am sensing your location"

*Madras makes more sense in the context, matress wouldn't fit. I believe it's saying that the guy is noticing his love falling into depression, she's keeping to herself and he's going to try and get her because he loves her. He senses her locations because to him she's not only there in person but she's in trapped in her mind too. The tinder box means there's still hope for "light" or hope for happiness.

"I am starting to sense your location You are somewhere in the basement Beating on a makeshift drum kit Songs that I can hardly stomach I'm floating on the stairwell With my fingers shaking frantic Thinking softly what a concrete mess we live in...

And what a ice box heart I've been given You could be in several different places I am sensing your location"

This is where the guy starts sensing that her depression is deeper than he can reach. She's sinking down and he's starting to become frantic because the depression is progressing faster than he can follow. He's realizing the hope is leaving and the depression is setting in like concrete. His efforts are becoming useless, his heart (efforts) are in vain (cold).

"You could be in several different places I am starting to sense your locale now

I am to starting to sense your location In in an old abandoned mansion In a country side of England Spirits trapped inside the linens And you're feeling quite at home there Also feeling somewhat lonely No one sees you in your pixelated fish nets And your black and orange beret"

He notices her trying to escape the gray but she's isolated herself so much that it's becoming impossible. Her problems (ghosts) are trapped around her and even though she tries to gain attention she is still feeling invisible and the guy can't pull her from her depressed state of mind.

"You could be in several different places I am sensing your location You could be in several different places I am starting to sense your locale now

Oh please believe the ghost in me Is doing what I can to find you out"

His love remains for her and he wants her back but he can't physically do anything to help her so he's searching his feelings for connections.

Song Meaning
Cover art for Location lyrics by Freelance Whales

was the whole melody taken from "Belle & Sebastian - The Stars Of Track And Field"?!?! very original :(

I hear about 3-4 measures in both songs that repeat the same melody. Saying this whole song is the same is quite an over-reaction. With the abundance of melodies that are constantly being created, this is more likely to happen as a coincidence rather than a conscious (or sub-conscious) copy of another song. To declare that the writer of this song as unoriginal is asinine.

I concur, my dear sir or madame! :)
