Watching the Planets Lyrics
Oh, oh, oh, watching the planets
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, watching the planets align
Oh, oh, oh, what is the reason
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, I got no reason to lie
Yes, yes, yes, killing the Ego
Yes, yes, yes, all right
Yes, yes, yes, killing the ego tonight
No, no, no, I got no secrets
No, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, I got not secrets to hide
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
See, the sun's going to rise
See, the sun's going to rise
And take your fears away
Like the soft tit on the motherbrain
Oh, oh, oh
Finding the answer
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Finding that there ain't no answer to find
Oh, oh, oh finding the answer
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Finding that there ain't no answer to find
Oh, oh, oh, watching the planets
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, watching the planets align
Oh, oh, oh, building a fire
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, burning the Bible tonight
Oh, oh, oh, watching the eagle
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Watching the eagle fly
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
The sun's going to rise
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, watching the planets align
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, I got no reason to lie
Yes, yes, yes, all right
Yes, yes, yes, killing the ego tonight
No, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, I got not secrets to hide
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
See, the sun's going to rise
And take your fears away
Like the soft tit on the motherbrain
Finding the answer
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Finding that there ain't no answer to find
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Finding that there ain't no answer to find
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, watching the planets align
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, burning the Bible tonight
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Watching the eagle fly
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
The sun's going to rise

It seems that this song is about watching the planets, all of outer space at night and realizing just how small and unimportant we are on the grand scale of things. It is lucky that we exist in this universe, and we must embrace it. "Killing the ego" refers ridding your mind of stupid shit such as religion, as the "burning the bible" line refers to. It's saying simply love yourself and the fact that you exist, because life is short and amazing.
God this song is good. As is the whole album.
I feel like this song is about the human race's futile attempts to figure out and define everything.
Like, sometimes, you just have to let things be as they are. There are things out there that can't be explained, and people look everywhere for answers; religion, science, whatever, yet they end up "finding out there ain't no answers to find." You just gotta accept that there are things in this world that are beyond you and that you can't define everything there is.
At least, that's how I take it.
I love this song, but has anyone seen the music video? Hahah
i just did wow... fail
i just did wow... fail
I agree with Gabesnake's interpretation. the percussion in this song is ace! def my fav on the new album!
I choose to interpret the mention of 'killing the ego' as the answer to what has been called the chief spiritual journey of our time: the seemingly phenomological quality of 'mind'. it's complicated being a wizard, my friends. but it is so beautiful..so beautiful.

So, I know that this song is about realizing how small we really are and that we are not important at all in the grand scheme of things. And that's fine, classic Flaming Lips.
One specific line really spoke to me though:
Oh, oh, oh, finding the answer Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Finding that there ain't no answer to find
The way I see it, we are always looking for validation that what we are doing is right, or that there is someone who knows that secret answer that will make our lives perfect. And we search and search for that person and that answer, but when it gets down to it, no one can give it to you. You have to answer your own questions. I guess I see it as, you can't find the answer out there, you have to find it from within.
The Lips I'm sure are saying that there IS no answer, and that you just have to deal with the meaninglessness of it all. But this is how it spoke to me–from a more existential point of view rather than a nihilistic one.
