Lose Your Soul Lyrics

oh,
you're gonna lose your soul, tonight.
you're gonna lose your soul,
you're gonna lose your soul,
tonight, tonight.

oh,
you're gonna lose control, tonight.
you're gonna lose control,
you're gonna lose control,
tonight, tonight, tonight.

[children's choir]
i get up in the morning
to the beat of the drum
i get up to this feeling,
keeps me on the run.
i get up in the morning,
put my dreams away,
i get up, i get up, i get up again.

I believe it's about someone who lives life in a conventional routined fashion and wishes to break from the structural lifestyle. He/she can't fulfill their dreams because they are stuck in a repetitive routine of conformity and of what society expects of them, until suddenly he/she lets go. Now this could be in whatever way possible, he/she may let go through alcoholism, sex, adrenaline, dance or anything that brings fourth a sense of escape. I don't know about you, but Ryan Gosling can escape to my bedroom anytime. Ha ha... Jokes. Maybe ._.

The children are right! for me this is a reference to the daily grind, everyday one has to get up, doing things your not fond of, but the beat of the drum (society, discipline) keeps you on the track. So you bury high hopes and dreams for the sake of keeping up.

For me, this song reminds of a guy who's kind of like the Narrator from Fight Club. During the day he's a typical office clerk, a nobody. But at night he decides to start living a real life. No matter what is this thing he does, but it's bigger than him, it's scary and even sad, but still very important to him.

oh, i'm in love.

"You're gonna lose your soul" refers to the youngsters of society whom are, seemingly, marginalized as "wild alcoholics" which in this case, it conforms to that. "You're gonna lose your soul" merely suggests changing in spirit, change in you, this is "tonight" - thus I assume they're dancing/drinking essentially going crazy and showing another side to them.

"i get up in the morning to the beat of the drum" shows adrenaline and power to go on, evidently, young people continue their lifestyle, that's what keeps them going and persisting.

I think it is about doing things to conform to the way society wants us to be and not liking them. Doing them and wiping emotions clean. Nothing. No dreams. Only what we are supposed to feel.

That's what I think it is about.

I think the most interesting thing about this song is the juxtaposition between a seductively-sung verse that seems very strongly sexual innuendo (You're gonna lose your soul tonight ... You're gonna lose control tonight) and a forcefully-sung verse that very strongly implies a loss of willpower and self-determination in life (I get up in the morning...).

I think the song is about surrendering willpower to society in all ways. For me it evoked the image of a person who abandons grand ambitions or dreams to start a family, and have a stable, demanding but boring career needed to sustain it, in effect trapping his/herself.

My Interpretation

This song is pertinent to this present society which we dwell upon, notably the young era of teenagers. The song is about adrenaline/power/not having control/wild/party/losing your spirit/changing for 'tonight'.

"You're gonna lose your soul tonight" - "tonight" is rather immediate and "tonight" everything is going to unveil, "tonight" is in the evening, this is when it turns dark. The darkness of "tonight" is relevant towards losing your soul, the dark side of you is going to unveil. "You're gonna lose control" evidently, you're not in self control, thus a change in you.

The children's choir adds to the adrenaline and power of the song: "i get up in the morning to the beat of the drum" suggest that adrenaline gets them going and determined to move on.

"i get up in the morning, put my dreams away," suggests that it's a continual cycle, dreams are put on hold, suggesting the relaxing manner of "these" people of society, they're not taking life seriously, they're living young and making the most of it.

My Interpretation

"beat of the drum" merely depicts heart beat, your heart is allowing you to move on, also it reflects a beat of music. Your heart is like music, since music makes you move to the beat. You cannot relax, this person has become accustomed to this lifestyle and due to this they can not fulfill their dreams
