Into The Mirror Lyrics

They got a mirror for the ‘caine in the bathroom

because nobody here knows when to stop

but for now we’re just making out with the door unlocked

back in the atrium the music’s slowing down,

the party’s thinning out
for the late crowd
fixes her lipstick,
fixes his belt,

the coast is clear as he walks out

She whispers:

“You get what you pay for

we could cost a lot

you get what you pay for

but we do it for the taste of a good high
we do it for the sake of a hot night”

Her man on the couch in the blue room
with everyone stoned and talking at once

with no thought to where they’d been

or what they could have done
she sits down beside him
without a hint of shame

because everything’s the same in its own way

Kisses her man’s cheek,

her hunter eyes lock on her prey

She signals:

You get what you play boy

we could play a lot
you get what you play boy
but you do it for the taste of a good high

we do it for the sake of a hot night

She senses the fear in him

with an irresistible kiss
and a lie she hangs on his neck
like a silver chain to her whim
pull him into the mirror again

She senses the need in him
for her irresistible kiss

and a lie that she hangs on his neck
like a silver chain to her whim

There’s a mirror for the ‘caine in the bathroom

because nobody here knows when to stop

and the hand towel on the rail

seems it hangs out here a lot

Obviously the song is about a girl cheating on her boyfriend and cocaine. I think that the girl is having sex with our mystery man in a bathroom at some party for a cocaine high. The man is clearly the one with the cocaine and the girl is having sex with him as some sort of twisted barter system which is bringing joy to the both of them. Both of the individuals are seeking there own "get what you pay for" allusion.

She is getting what she pays for because she pleasures this man for "a good high". He is getting what he pays for by providing a little blow for "a good night".

I am not sure about the stanza where she sings "She senses the mirror in him", or "She senses the fear in him" as the lyrics are a bit vague and either one presents a different picture. I think my ears believe it is the "senses the fear in him part". As in, she feels her boyfriend knows something may not be as it seems but she allays his fear by giving him a confident, loving kiss to reassure her that everything is normal. The repetition of the opening chorus essentially states that once the night is over, at some later point the girl is in need of a good high and her cocaine providing lover needs another good night and once again they are getting what they both need in the bathroom. Obviously "nobody here knows when to stop" Great creative, thought provoking writing by MTB.

I thought the comparison to the cheating and cocaine usage made them both seem equal. The cheating gives the girl and guy an adrenaline rush, or a good high. The cocaine gives the same effect, therefore the cheating is almost like a drug. They even leave the door unlocked, as if they don't care if people see, almost like they're pushing their luck.

damn right on point.

There is no doubt this song is about a girl cheating for blow and using sex to get it. But I think the line about "you get what you pay for" is more her asking the guy she just banged for coke a question not a statement. You get what you pay for? Like was it worth it? and the we could cost a lot meaning this could continue into the future and it would take more blow etc...I love how there never seems to be a lack of songs about slutty girls cheating and doing drugs. Thanks for starting it all Eve.

My Interpretation

The word "atrium" here also refers to the atrium of the heart.

"Back in the atrium the music's slowing down, party's thinning out"

The girl in this song is cocaine, where the high of hooking up is a metaphor to the high of cocaine. As cocaine wears off your heart slows down and the cocaine in your blood thins out. It's a double meaning of the word atrium, and a reference to how women can affect your figurative "heart" and the literal, biological effect of cocaine.

and here are some differences that i hear: "They got a mirror FOR THE caine in the bathroom"

then the second chorus sounds like it's: "she signals, you get what you PLAY for and we could play a lot you get what you PLAY for but you do it for the taste of a good high you do it for the sake of a hot night"

anddd "she senses the FEAR in him"

i'm pretty sure that that's what i'm hearing

I absolutely love this song. So freakin' catchy. Is it possible to listen to this song just once? I have yet to listen to it without repeating at least once.

I'm guessing it's about a girl cheating on her boyfriend at a party and her boyfriend is their also and he has not idea of what she did, and she cheats on him for a thrill basically. It's pretty obvious. I know cause I know how girls are since I'm one and my friends have done it not cause I've done it.

I love MTB's style so differnt then other bands it's insane, getting my mtb tattoo in 2 days on my ribs woo!

Plus I the female vocals, it's something different and adds on to minus the bears evolving and maturing in this album. I didn't like it at frst but it started to grow on but I adore the song.

I don't think the whole boyfriend/girlfriend concept gives the song its due credit. MTB is a band of grown men and I assume the lyrics tell a tale of higher stakes between adults, perhaps socialites or aristocrats.

Anyhow, I love the song, can't wait for the CD, and MTB is the Beethoven of our time! Their music is more than good - it's brilliant, catchy, capturing, all without being over-indulgent like most indie bands.

Really? Have you listened to any of their previous albums? Most of the songs are about sex in the pool, sex in the car, etc.

They're not above anything.

I think that when he is talking about the coke it is to set the seen for the kind of party it is.

I really do think that this song is about a girl cheating on her boyfriend in their own home during a party. When they talk about that "we could cost alot" and "we could play alot" its like him saying that she could lose alot if caught and it was her first time cheating so she is thinking about doing it again.

Awesome song though, I should expect no less from Minus the Bear. Cant wait for the album!

i think the "mirror in him" part is just her seeing her own self-destructive characteristics in him

favorite song ever <3

Oh, he says "they'd" instead of "they've" and "boy" instead of "for."

I'm obviously a huge failure.

Lol, no need to cry over it. Calm down dude.
