Cover Me Again Lyrics
heart of steel
born to kill
mothers milk
left me dressed in shame
i just go my way
move too fast
it won't last
hammerhead
daddy went away
he still knows my name
ooh somethings gotta give
the paper on the wall
soon will peel and fall
ooh and then you see my face
painted up with sin
cover me
cover me again
i outgrew my old shoes
my backyard
was cluttered up with lies
keeps it easy on the eyes
fresh home made
undershade
black and red
paint my fingers blue
still hiding from the truth
mm my best friend kills the pain
hmm but only for a day
mm keeps chewing on my veins
ooh somethings gotta give
the paper on the wall
soon will peel and fall
ooh and then you see my face
painted up with sin
cover me
cover me again
cover me again...
born to kill
mothers milk
left me dressed in shame
i just go my way
move too fast
it won't last
hammerhead
daddy went away
he still knows my name
the paper on the wall
soon will peel and fall
ooh and then you see my face
painted up with sin
cover me
cover me again
my backyard
was cluttered up with lies
keeps it easy on the eyes
fresh home made
undershade
black and red
paint my fingers blue
still hiding from the truth
mm my best friend kills the pain
hmm but only for a day
mm keeps chewing on my veins
the paper on the wall
soon will peel and fall
ooh and then you see my face
painted up with sin
cover me
cover me again
cover me again...

Amazing song. I love how his voice is soft and sweet contrasting how it usually is. He really isn't a good singer, though I love his voice, but something about the way he sings it makes it sound more real and authentic. Like you know why he's singing the song. I could listen to it a thousand times. Meaning is pretty obvious and personal.
I think it is a song about growing up, and specifically the hardships of growing up, with references to a father who was not there, being shamed, and fighting these issues, like turning to a friend, who kills the pain "only for a day". Whilst this can be interpreted as a song about turning to drugs, the authenticity seems to me as this is possibly a song directly about Matt and Brad's childhood, as they had many problems as children and often referred to themselves as dirt poor. All in all it is a brilliant and simple song that shows Matt's ability as a singer and lyricist.
One comment on this song. That's mind blowing.
