Full Steam Lyrics
All our lives we’ve dreamed about it
Just to find that it was never real
This sure ain’t no great Valhalla
Coming closer each turn of the wheel
Forlorn, adrift on seas of beige
In this our Golden Age
This hurts us as much as it hurts you
Just lie back and think of England
Bullied, suckered, pimped and patronised
Every day your tawdry little lives
So loose your head
And step within
The silence deafening
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming but still
Running full steam ahead
In and out of consciousness
It breaks my heart to see you like this
Crying, wringing hands and cursing fate
Always so little far too late
It’s 3am I’m wide awake
There’s still one call to make
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
But still running full steam
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming but still
Running full steam
Now you
And I
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you
And I
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Just to find that it was never real
This sure ain’t no great Valhalla
Coming closer each turn of the wheel
Forlorn, adrift on seas of beige
In this our Golden Age
Just lie back and think of England
Bullied, suckered, pimped and patronised
Every day your tawdry little lives
So loose your head
And step within
The silence deafening
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming but still
Running full steam ahead
It breaks my heart to see you like this
Crying, wringing hands and cursing fate
Always so little far too late
It’s 3am I’m wide awake
There’s still one call to make
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
And I saw it coming
But still running full steam
Now you saw it coming
And I saw it coming but still
Running full steam
Now you
And I
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it
Now you
And I
We all saw it coming
But we still bought it

This is by far the best song on DRAW THE LINE!
When I hear this song I feel that they are talking about the world. The current situation that we are in. We all saw it (the world recession) coming but ignored the signs. We are now in dire need of help and alot of countries are suffering. This song can most def be transalted to the USA's current situation with the economic bust. Or if you wanna get crazy it can even relate to global warming!!! We all knew for ever we were killing our world and now we are seeing the effects. Or you can even make it about yourself you knew you were messing up and it finally caught up to you and are paying the price.
Just my thoughts! I just love this song it has so many meanings!!!
I think of this song referring to a couple who spent their whole lives preparing for retirement, not enjoying the moment since they thought they would when retirement came, only realize when they reached retirement, it was wasn't what they figured it would be. Along the way they were noticing it was likely not going to be anything great but they didn't do anything to change because life stayed busy.
one of the albums best :)
I agree JCD4FUN. The first thing I thought of when I heard this was our current economic crisis...we all saw it coming but we still bought over-priced homes, over-priced stocks, over-priced dreams only to see it all crash and burn. Definitely my favorite on the album.
In and out of consciousness It breaks my heart to see you like this ... It’s 3am I’m wide awake There’s still one call to make, one call
I think those lines are something on a much more personal level than an economic crisis.
I think it's about a couple whose relationship hasn't been too good, whose lives have lacked fulfilment, and one of them is dying.
Possibly I'm prejudiced because death is a recurring theme of DG. (The One I Love, White Ladder, etc. All brilliant though.)
I believe that Full Steam Ahead is about a couple who was doing very well financially and then one of them lost their job and could no longer afford to pay the mortgage on their home. When the couple bought the house they knew it was expensive but they did every last worst case scenario except one of them losing their job. This couple is going thru the emotions of losing their American Dream; just waiting for the bank to take their home!
Always thought that this song was about world war 1..
"All our lives we've dreamed about it, Just to find that it was not so great. This sure ain't no great Valhalla" - The last great war, turned out not so great, and not the last war..
Why can't this song be about life, instead of a national, personal, or other crisis? I think we're handling a standard couple, or family, or group of people that are simply coming to grips with something that was previously sidestepped or denied.
Being awake at 3am makes me think of love lost, and perhaps that which is seen coming is another lover. The song reminds me of a less dark version of Warren Zevon's "She's Too Good for Me," though that song is hardly well-veiled.
I think this song is similar to Annie's song No More 'I Love Yous'. It's a dark awakening to life and love.
There's not many things in the world made by man I wouldn't Damn to hell but the MUSIIC i love I will marry for it is Life sweet life that is what we are
