I think this song is about a man that is set to commit suicide. In fact he mentions it in his song. He is fed up with the world and of course is going to get drunk and party on his last night. I would say the person in the song is someone that is very educated being that he does read the newspaper.. The way many did back in the 70's. Thinking too much and taking the problems of the world too hard, he clearly has had enough. Notice no mention of any women. The guy just gave up on life and people in general and is content to have his double for this last night on earth.
