Map of the World Lyrics

There's a map of the world
On the wall in your room
Green pins where ya wanna to go
White pins where ya been
There isn't even ten,
You're already feeling old
Pretty face stair back
From a magazine stack
That you read when
You're feeling bored
Look through a telescope lens
It doesn't make sense
You think you've been there before

Some far off feelings
Some up close kind of ache
Wide screen reason to
Look the other way

There's a place by the lake
That you go when it's late
It was summer and the crowds were gone
And you sit all alone with
With your thoughts, gettin' stoned
Just waitin' for some peace to come

Like the thing that'cha
Tried that you thought you liked
For a minute then it all felt wrong
So your changin' again
All your clothes, all your friends
Just the same as it ever was

That far off feeling
That up close kind of ache
Some wide screen reason to
Look the other way

Iahh

Ouu

Iahh
La dum

La dum
La dum
La dum

It's a road that you've paved
Over Indian graves and
You wonder why your dreams are crazed
So you cling to your wife,
Your kids, and you life
There's nothin' that you're gonna save
Put the razor to your face,
Hot water for a shave
Kill the shadow of yesterday
Clean shirt, clean pants,
Clean slate second chance
You're goin' by another name

Some far off feeling
Some up close kind of ache
That instant karma
That always comes too late

Iahh

Ouu

Iahh
La dum

La dum
La dum
La dum
La dum

how hard does that hit?

bravo Conor, on finding another way to make me cringe in the relevance of this.

just another one to add to the list of beautiful works of art from these guys.

This song invokes feelings of restlessness, existential longing, and ennui–feelings that seem ubiquitous to living in a post-modern world. The individual described in the song seems to be stuck in a moratorium as he or she resorts to numerous distractions (i.e., TV, popular culture, psychoactive substances) to dull a sense of discomfort that is both palpable and obscure. His or her life is mundane and devoid of meaning. Moreover, the person lacks a clear sense of identity (i.e., an integrated sense of self, values, and direction in life) and subsequently feels listless, confused, and resorts to actively clinging to ephemeral things. However, instead of this being a personal failure, the song seems to point the finger at the environment in which the person lives. The culprit is the destruction of traditional, direct, and perhaps spiritually fulfilling ways of existing (i.e., Indian graves) to pave the way for modernity and empty consumerism. That far off feeling is existential angst. That up-close ache is mundane dysphoria. The wide-screen reason to look the other way describes our tendency to distract ourselves with contemporary palliatives instead of finding something more fulfilling–-whatever it may be.

Kinda verbose, but I think you hit the nail on the head.

This song is the reason I always want to fulfill my dreams. This song seems like it's about a person who never achieved their dreams, and gives up.

My Opinion

Do ya'll think it's - "A WIDE screen reason to look the other way" or "A WHITE screen reason to look the other way". I'm not really sure which one makes more sense : )

I hear wide screen... white screen doesn't even really make any sense

"WIDE" screen = the plasma/LCD televisions we have today, and the numbing distraction they offer. Also, I'm hearing "Clean SLATE, second chance", not "Clean SLEET". Clean slate makes much more sense.

This song will always hold a special place in my heart. My freshman year of college my dad lost our house and moved 2 hours from home up into the city, I broke up with my girlfriend who I loved very much because she was still in high school and I didn't know how it could possibly last, and I was set adrift in a sea of new faces and landscapes. I eventually found my way to a friendly party one night where I promptly joined the circle of cheerful stoners on and around the couch upstairs. The owner of the particular house I was at put on a vinyl copy of this from his record collection and by the time it reached this song we were probably on the sixth or seventh joint. Sitting there in this circle with these friendly people who brought me in as one of their own; the second verse began playing. When I heard those lyrics I immediately felt the parallels in my own life. I began to question where I was going and why I was going there, I ended up getting out of my major choice that was making me miserable and switched it to music. Despite the current level of horrible life events I've had to suffer through I've become more and more optimistic and cheerful, all because I got stoned and heard a poet say some words to me.

God, I'm going to an ivy league law school and I still love Conor as much as I loved him when I was fourteen. His lyrics seem as if my own soul is finding the words I couldn't speak before he did. I'm so grateful for this. beyond words I guess.
