Undisclosed Desires Lyrics
A truly wonderful song, but it is NOT about a woman or sex - which is much too shallow for M. Bellamy.
It's about the masks we all wear (male - violence, female - beautiful) as opposed to those deeper secret (undisclosed) desires within (anyone's) heart - the true desires to be genuine, as buried under the more obvious and deceptive kind that really should not be there, such as demanding "demons from (our) past".
The males among us wear the (false) mask of physical threat (violence), and the females; the need to be outwardly "beautiful" - both in order to "trick lovers" that we are sexy - at once, both 'wicked and divine", when only "the innocence is (real) mine" - but undisclosed.
Indeed we are all being encouraged to look deeper, for that inner beauty, which is "not just a mask".
"I know you've suffered" is according the environment today in which we live - "It's cold and loveless" which causes us all to "suffer", resulting in "want to hide" from the world's harshness. So we develop an inner "violence" we imagine will protect us, but really needs to be "soothed" and "reconciled" - before we can think about developing the GENUINE 'me' within.
I made an account jsut to reply to this post. Dude spot on interpretation, Gave me the chills to read honestly, and yes any song about sex would be too shallow for Matthew to write. which made your interpretation so much better

I agree. Matt is not shallow and a song about sex or anything like that would imply he is. Not to mention it would turn away thousands of fans. One of the many reasons I listen to Muse is because none of the songs are about sex or booze or money. You just can't find anything pure in today's society. And when people find a song about intimate relationships they squeal and are all "Ooh! They're kissing" And crap like that. None of them are mature enough. I'm 12 and I'm already more mature than most 30 year old people!...

I'm 12 and I'm already more mature than most 30 year old people! Golly! Some think right away this song is about sex. Well, it isn't. If you ponder it, you find it is a sad song. It makes me cry! He loves her despite her faults and wants to heal her from past relationships that have obviously scared her! And when he says: Please me Show me how it's done Tease me You are the one Most think: sex. They are wrong. Please me, meaning let me be with you. Show me how it's done, meaning tell me how not to hurt you because I don't want you hurt. Tease me, meaning she lets him in, then shuts him out. You are the one. That one's just self explanatory.
I agree with many of the comments above, but here is my take: He is captivated with a woman who has built a wall because of past hurt. She hides behind this wall (and perhaps unnatural actions, i.e., sarcasm, giving the impression that she is a sinner) in an effort to avoid being hurt again. He relates to her on a emotional level and wants to help her find happiness and comfort in love again. There is an emotional connection in this song that really touches me, it's a fantastic track.
As i started reading the comments from the beginning, yours is the best I read so far. As for the sexual note that many seem to find in this song, it might be true, but not without the strong emotional involvement that speaks from the lyrics and melody. Later on I read that apparantly it´s a song about an (ex) girlfriend of matthew, so then your intepretation makes even more sense.

Agree with the above.

"I know you suffered But I don't want you to hide It's cold and loveless I won't let you be denied"
She's suffered in the past in relationships, but doesn't want her to shut everyone off. Its saying that I know that where you are right now is cold and loveless, but it doesn't have to be that way and I can change that.

"I want to reconcile the violence in your heart I want to recognize your beauty is not just a mask I want to exorcise the demons from your past I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart"
There is violence in her heart, to the point where past pain has driven her to push everyone away through whatever means necessary in order to not be hurt. Even with all of that, she is still an incredible person and has amazing inner beauty. Exorcise the demons: Help her trust and love again and be able to look back without feeling pain. Satisfy the undisclosed desires (can be taken sexually, of course), but I think that this speaks to him understanding that in her heart she craves more but is to scared to allow those desires to love and closeness to be disclosed to anyone.
"You trick your lovers that you're wicked and divine You may be a sinner But your innocence is mine"
She acts both ways. At times, she'll open herself up a little bit and allow someone in, and they'll see the 'divine' side of her. But, more often she keeps her mask up, and that mask is of a carefree 'wicked' girl. Her actions lead people to believe she is a sinner (by the puritan definition), but he understands that it is all an act she puts up to try and keep people away.
"Please me Show me how it's done Tease me You are the one"
Again, this could be taken sexually. But, it can be taken in another way as well. 'Please me, show me how it's done' - Make me happy, open yourself up, show me who you really are.. 'Tease me, you are the one' - She is teasing him by letting her guard down a little bit at a time, and even through those small cracks in her armor he can tell that she is the one.
This song is 1984 all over, pretty much like the rest of the album. If you read it, it becomes really obvious that the woman in the song is Julia.
one person got it. that's it?
one person got it. that's it?
this song is about winston smith's feelings for julia in 1984. if you read the book (or at least listen to it on youtube) you'll realize the girl in the song is julia
I relate to this song more than anything. I relate mostly to the girl he is singing about.
I have sinned and done wrong in the past, and because of this, have had to hide in a cold and loveless life. I have tricked lovers to believe I am a goddess (wicked and divine) and in doing so, lost my innocence in a sinful way.
I long for someone to come my way and soothe my pain and make me feel pure again.
first i feel there were hope sparking between in the lyrics of this song, then i realise,if i keep looking forward other people to save me that i will be vulnerable if that person can't handle it. so my new enpowering song is patrick wolf's Lycanthropy .boy's are pricks let's cut their penis off and be our own hero!!!

I really like this song as well. There is a woman I like. She is a dancer so she has to trick guys all and make them think she is wicked and divine. It is so hard for her to get to really know guys and people in general. The girls in the clubs have a life of deception and using people and they use and deceive each other. Guys fall all over them because of how they have to act and look to get there money. They have to tease them and some of the...

They have to tease them and some of the guys fall in love and spend a pile of money and spend a bunch of time in the club. He sees her inner self and is in love with her heart and soul. He knows her pain and her emptiness. HE wants to help her live again and be happy.
This song is VERY different from typical Muse. But I love it. The way I interpret it, is loving someone and wishing to be with them despite their past, imperfections, and hardships. It's about accepting someone who they are and making everything better for them. It's beautiful.
not really.... I mean, supermassive black hole is about sex. and I believe this song is about this girl whot ricks men into thinking she's wicked, and she used to a be a horrible person fucking everyone. he doesn't care, he wants to do everything for her she's always wanted to have done to her (non sexually and sexually). he wants to heal her.

This song is quite touching. Many songs by this Band are quite good. I agree with GottaSecret..this song is about earning the trust of someone and helping put down their walls that have been built due to past hurts. It's quite beautiful to be loved in this way. For someone to help you heal instead of hurting you. But there is a sexual undertone contrasted with the purity of the intent. Good and Bad.

to me this song is about many things but mainly to me it encapsulates perfectly how unconditional love is and no matter what this person does or has done nothing can stop you from loving them and you can see through their barriers and want to keep giving to them to make them better despite the walls they put up and you cant stop even if it hurts you
I think that this song is directed towards a girl whom has been hurt deeply in the past and therefore closes herself off from love and this in turn makes her bitter. She still teases men from a sexual stance, but won't let anyone become close to her let alone love her. She creates this façade of being a cold-hearted beauty when all she wants is someone who will appreciate her.
I also think that he is saying that despite her loss of innocence, he will treat her as if she were pure hence, "I'll make you feel pure". I can totally relate.

I feel like the guy in this song, the similarities between the lyrics and what I'm going through are quite breathtaking. Especially "I want to exorcise the demons from your past/I want to satisfy the undisclosed desires in your heart" and "I know you've suffered/But I don't want you to hide" I have a penchant for picking up boys with lots of emotional baggage. I want to help them, but I have a feeling whoever wrote this song was with (or wanted to be with) a girl who didn't want or accept that she needed his help. Being held at arm's length is the worst thing anyone can do to someone who cares. I mean, we care enough to love you beyond what has happened, what you look like, how you act and we get thrown to the curb. Love is blind, but sometimes when you're blind, you run into knee-height tables and walls...
This song reminds me of my girlfriend so much <3 I always play it when we're together (good thing we have the same taste in music X'D)
"I know you've suffered But I don't want you to hide" She's had quite alot of awful shit happen to her, alot of her close family members died recently (her farther, uncle and grndfarther being the ones she was closest too) not to mention she was constantly bullied and a social outcast until last year :c. i really want her not to hide anymore, sometimes she distances herself from people from fear of rejection, i hate watching her that upset.
"I want to reconcile the violence in your heart I want to recognize your beauty is not just a mask" When she was in depression she was quite violent and got into quite a few fights, i want to help her get over that and reconize that she is no longer like that.
