I think Wilson said that this is about the moment when he ended is IT job and decided to become a musician.

Yes, I was gonna post that. Beautiful song and beautiful transition to Drawing the Line.

What's odd is that I'd be a little excited about this "new career." Why else would he do it? Instead, his song sounds very somber. He described the change as being "scary," as he was well-set in life as a company man -- which isn't the same thing.

That all said, my initial interpretation of this song -- half-described above and fitting with the lyrics -- really hit a strong note with me at my current stage in life, so I love this song regardless.

Hey, do any of you remember where you read about him quitting his job to become a musician? I've been curious to read a good biography of him, and the most extensive think i can find is the Wikipedia page.

I read on the info sent out about the special edition album that there was a song concerning Wilson turning his back on a traditional career in favour of pursuing his musical ambitions. Perhaps this is it?

If this is the case, 'kneel and disconnect' could perhaps be the pattern his was following prior to changing direction - giving in to the pressure for a normal less risky career. Disconnecting from his dreams.

Beautiful song though. Would love to hear an extended version of it!

Why post this when we haven't heard the entire song yet?

This actually is the full song.

Yep, the album was leaked. A lot of fans probably don't know that though.

The album is a masterpiece. I already paid for my copy long ago, but I was listening to the leak. Remember Me Lover will go down as a classic.

If taken literally, I think it might be about a person who can't find the right job and be satisfied.

Kneel and disconnect meaning think about the job then quit.

Fill the application meaning filling out another job application and starting a new career as a repeat process.

That's just my thoughts, it could be symbolic for something else.

I wish this song was longer, it's beautiful.

I got the album leaked on my computer even though I pre ordered it, I was not disappointed. Porcupine Tree is an amazing band, shame they don't get more recognition.

This song is definitely about SW's decision to leave the IT world to become a full-time musician.

"kneel and disconnect" - kneeling down to work on the computers themselves (disconnecting wires/cables)?

"Fill the application" - programming/installing the applications on the computers?

The narrator is disconnecting from himself so that the shallowness of his life and routine of every day life doesn't kill him. He still recognizes that what he's doing is meaningless, hence the word "waste." "Time Flies" is all about childhood and wondering where it went, and perhaps the narrator doesn't want to lose his child-like spirit and sense of imagination. At the same time, unless they have an abnormally strong spirit, it's impossible for one to hold onto such artifacts as an adult and still have a career. That's what this one is about.

"Waste another year" could also refer to hiding from one's problems. In this way, I think the lyrics to this song could be related to "I Drive the Hearse." "Hoping it will go away" "Living with my mistakes" "Getting through another day" etc. The narrator is wasting his life by hiding away his problem and his regrets. The lyrics to "Great Expectations" lead me to believe that there is a specific person involved. The narrator goes through year after year of constantly thinking about this, but he never acts on it or considers making amends because he's too scared to.

There is an air of regret that seems to pervade the album.

That piano loop that repeats over the last third of this song is a little haunting. I kept bumping my iTunes back to that spot to listen to it. I think I found out what it was. It is remarkably reminiscent of the song "Truenorth" by No-man, a different Stephen Wilson project.

If you're curious, about 11 minutes into the song Truenorth is a good spot to hear it. Compare that to the piano loop in Kneel and Disconnect toward the end. Anyone else hear it? Is there a connection here?

I think he is talking about having certain knowledge about the way things work around here. When receiving this information there is two things you can do, kneel and disconneect (from the feeling that you should do something with it) and carry on with your live. Once you do this, you will start a new carreer, but I am not really sure if you should be happy with it.

On the other hand, it could mean he finally sees the thruth, he kneels to this new knowledge and distances himself from it and decides tot apply for a new job, a new carreer, in wich he can talk about his knowledge.

Steven, tell us! :)

My Interpretation

Ok, replying on my on interpretation.. It is like a discussion with yourself, how nice :)

I couldn't stop thinking about the meaning of this song and now I am sure that (in my opinion) it is about spiritual growth. Once you know your true purpose here on earth, wich is;

to LOVE..

it is very difficult to decide what to do with it. We live in a world full of (pretend) fear, fueled hatred etc. and when you participate in this world, it makes you an accessary. This is a very difficult feeling, because most of your loved ones do...

interesting, because i've always interpreted "drive and disconnect" to mean like just getting behind the wheel and driving anywhere to leave behind ("disconnect [from]") your troubles

Simple yet tough. Hmm...the title makes me think that it has to do with the internet in some way. Or it might be about wiping the slate clean and starting anew constantly. Still, I don't know how that fits into the concept of the title track suite.
