The Last Unicorn Lyrics

Well we’ll kiss for that’s how it begins,
We’ll embrace just to warm our skins.
I’ll think of her and you’ll think of him.

And we’ll talk to keep the silence from our ears,
And we’ll laugh because we’re so close to tears,
We’re just lonely, you know, that’s why we’re here.

Cos you don’t taste like you should,
And you don’t fit in my arms like she would.
Lying in the dark, it’s understood:
We are both lost.
And we won’t be found.

We will wake up with each other in our paws,
You cover over white bits like I’ve not seen them before.
We’ll say goodbye and then we’ll say no more.

Cause hearts won’t buy love and nor will they sell,
And there is no love in this hotel.
Though we’re walking home we know too well
We are both lost
We are both lost
And we won’t be found.

She was my compass,
He was your map,
We’ve come too far to be turning back.

And we’ll sit on our single beds,
Nothing on our hearts and tears on our threads,
For we know the last unicorn is dead.

This song has a certain and definite finality to it , for whatever reason The last unicorn is dead , a.k.a the last love both parties had experienced is never to be reconciled ..

" We are both lost. And we wont be found."

So whenever these two ex-pats of love meet up in the hotel room , " And there is no love in this hotel" , they make an attempt at filling the empty void living within each of them...

They then go through with the motions and acts familiar to them , but its not the same , " We’ll embrace just to warm our skins" , "Cos you don’t taste like you should, And you don’t fit in my arms like she would."

But at the end one cannot fake or coerce anything as magical or majestic as { the last unicorn} a.k.a true love "Cause hearts won’t buy love and nor will they sell"

In conclusion

"And we’ll sit on our single beds, Nothing on our hearts and tears on our threads, For we know the last unicorn is dead."

Both parties acknowledge the harsh reality of never again experiencing the dizzying and rare high of real true love , no matter how hard they may chase it , its gone forever ... Its dead.

The song is pretty self explanatory.

The couple is together out of need, not out of love. They are each other's "rebounds" and they both know and accept it. They are together just to try to fill the void but it's not working: "Cos you don’t taste like you should, And you don’t fit in my arms like she would. Lying in the dark, it’s understood: We are both lost."

Unicorns are meant to be pure, perfection, magic. They both accepted their own chance at true love is over. "And we’ll sit on our single beds, Nothing on our hearts and tears on our threads, For we know the last unicorn is dead."

My interpretation of the song is that it's a last desperate attempt to fulfill an unrequited love, by sleeping with a different friend or prostitute. He starts to realize mid-song that it's not going to work and, In the end, he finds that nothing can fill the void left by the unrequited love.
