Odds Lyrics

Back and forth, the same,
Be careful how you frame
Your argument, your argument.

We been giving all we can
And it finally showed the end
Of our tolerance, our tolerance.

I know it's hard to say, we’ll throw it all away,
But the odds are we'll be better off.

And it’s a painful thought to try another start

But the odds are we’ll be better off

Cast another vote in our sad terminal democracy, democracy.
The word is out on us, we have gone delirious,
The floor is falling out from under us, it always does.

I know it's hard to say, we’ll throw it all away,
But the odds are we'll be better off.

And it’s a painful thought to try another start

But the odds are we’ll be better off

I think this song might be about the band and all the stuff they went through to create Armistice. I mean, they almost broke up and scratched all their original songs that they've written over the years of touring and created almost completely over.

With swft24's correction, I think you're right with that interpretation.

This is about a breakup, almost guaranteed. It's about a couple who've reached the end of their tolerance with one another, and while it's scary to think about going back into dating and trying to find romance again, it's more likely that they'll each find a better situation than the one they're currently in.

The "sad terminal democracy" is not literal - it's a metaphor for the arguing the couple's been having - as a couple they both have a say in decisions concerning them - the "vote", so to speak. Reading commercialism into this is overanalyzing.

If it was about the band, the story wouldn't end with the "odds" being that they're better apart.

My Interpretation

On further review, it's probably meant to be ambiguous - it wouldn't be about the band splitting up necessarily, but about scrapping everything and starting over. This makes sense, and is probably where the song started.

But I think the key point is that it's not overly specific, so that an alternate interpretation like mine is possible.

I believe they are saying that the odds are they are better off for throwing away their previous attempts at their second album and painfully starting over.

Definately about the band. This song sounds like a Dido song.

Honestly, I think this song is about trying to find a voice in a world supposedly run by consummerism. By casting our votes, we think we're making a difference, but sometimes one voice doesn't really matter against a tide of false prophets. People say "We'll be better off" choosing between the lesser of two evils, but sometimes we're fighting a war that we really can't win on our own.

I guess this would be considered more of a personal opinion of the song, basically how I interpret it.

"The odds are, we'll be better off."

I've been having my problems with addiction of cigarettes, and I've been in a constant mindset of trying to quit and it's the hardest thing to do.

It's cheap measured pleasure, and I know in my mind that I would be better off without smoking but my flesh craves the nicotine. That's just how I see it I suppose.

This song has grown a lot on me. I can relate to it recently as well with a relationship i had that withered away.

I agree with Marquis in that it's about a breakup. After all the arguments, tolerating as much as they could of each other's shit and democratic compromising, they realize it's better if they just move on. It's painful to start over, but it's what they must do

Hmmmm.... I believe Paul is speking of America in this song... how we ruined our nation's morals AND reputation with Democracy...
