Talking Through Glass Lyrics
It never turns out right for me and you
No matter how I try to see it through
We gather ourselves up and start again
Feels like I'm trying to catch the wind
You are the door to which I've lost the keys
We are a puzzle with a missing piece
We gather ourselves up and start again
Feels like I'm trying to catch the wind
And I can't carry on living like this, talking through glass
You know that I can't be the one to banish the mist
And ghosts in your past
So cold to touch you and your heart
And when I care too much, we fall apart
We gather ourselves up and start again
Feels like I'm trying to catch the wind
So I'm left without a choice but walking out
Though I've no hope, I'll never find someone like you
My head is screaming "I have to leave you" but my heart is filled with doubt
Don't wanna leave but tell me what else can I do
We move like swingsets
No matter how I try to see it through
We gather ourselves up and start again
Feels like I'm trying to catch the wind
We are a puzzle with a missing piece
We gather ourselves up and start again
Feels like I'm trying to catch the wind
You know that I can't be the one to banish the mist
And ghosts in your past
And when I care too much, we fall apart
We gather ourselves up and start again
Feels like I'm trying to catch the wind
Though I've no hope, I'll never find someone like you
My head is screaming "I have to leave you" but my heart is filled with doubt
Don't wanna leave but tell me what else can I do

"When I brought the swing sets idea to the guys I was a little worried, because it was one of the first ideas I had created with lyrics and me singing. Everyone seemed to like it, but it never really found its place in a full song. Dustin had the idea to place it at the end of "Talking Through Glass", and we ran with it. He and I ended up talking about lyrical content from my perspective and linking the two songs together.
The swing sets idea came about from my memories as a kid, swinging staring at the person next to you. Every once in awhile, you would link up with that person and feel stuck eye-to-eye in some sort of connected stillness amongst all the greater movement around you. It always seemed special to me, but it would never last long unless you were both working together to keep the connection. I felt that that was a perfect metaphor for love and relationships. We all deal with this and often get lost in the movement, unable to connect again."
-Ed, straight from the vinyl liner notes
Does this mean Dustin no longer believes in God? : \ I'm not sure about this one..
no. it means he has doubts. who doesnt? i think its tight that he is expressing that in song for everybody to see. contrary to popular believe dustin isnt perfect

"Talking Through Glass was inspired loosely by some ideas Ed had about the frustrations of not being able to save certain relationships that had so much promise to start. The Swing Sets concept is at the core. Ed explains it in the liner notes of the vinyl."

It sounds to me like an unhappy relationship and just getting tired of giving a 100% and not getting it in return and the person has changed and the other doesn't understand them anymore. Then just ending it for the better cause the person is emotionally exhausted and doesn't know what else to do.
i have no idea what this song means.
help!
oh and his vocals near the end make me think of newer norma jean....
this whole cd is a story and at this point in the story the person is dead and can't be heard.
Where did you hear it was a story? That would be sick.

same same! brooks. in fact i think it is a very similiar song lyrically too. i get vibes of frustration in a relationship from this one.
I agree with the phil dude. I think it might be about doubts that he has concerning his faith and following an invisible God. Example: "It feels like I'm trying to catch the wind". All followers of Christ have doubts, and he's having trouble at times believing in God. He's frustrated in the end, saying that one one hand, he'll never find anything like God, but he's thinking about giving up and asking "what else can I do?" I can really relate to this, personally.
The relationship with a girl theory doesn't make sense to me given the lines about chasing the wind and banishing myths/ghosts in your place. But that's just me. Plus as far as I know he's happily married.
what is he whispering at the end of this song?? i cant tell
"We move like swing sets" I got the iTunes version of the album and this song is called "Talking Through Glass/We Move Like Swing Sets"

Here is the core concept of the song, according to Dustin:
"Talking Through Glass was inspired loosely by some ideas Ed had about the frustrations of not being able to save certain relationships that had so much promise to start. The Swing Sets concept is at the core. Ed explains it in the liner notes of the vinyl."
