You Went Gold Lyrics

This feeling is so relative to where I am tonight
If you only knew
You're sleeping on a cloud
and I'm barely off the ground
That's nothing new

You left me in the water
And everybody knew I would drown for you
And everything reminds me

There's a place we used to know
Bullet-proof in all black clothes
In all black
I wanted you but never told
I went nowhere, you went gold
You went gold

This time you're in color
Are you hoping I would see
Is it working out
The words you use are different
But it sounds the same to me
I know what gets you down

And everything reminds me
All of this reminds me

There's a place we used to know
Bullet-proof in all black clothes
In all black
I wanted you but never told
I went nowhere, you went gold
You went gold
You went gold

Something here is different
Where I used to have a chance
I don't know you now
I've always been so reckless
But I can't get over this
You're not helping out

And everything reminds me
All of this reminds me

There's a place we used to know
Bullet-proof in all black clothes
In all black
I wanted you but never told
I went nowhere, you went gold
You went gold

this song is probably about kelly clarkson. ryan and she had a messy "relationship" throughout lights and sounds and paper walls. a few songs from that era are about her. it is speculated that ryan wanted them to date but due to her touring schedules and all of the attention she was getting while "going gold" kinda stopped them from doing so. ryan went on to dedicate some songs a few times to "a girl he just couldn't get"

You're sleeping on a cloud and I'm barely off the ground

and

I went nowhere, you went gold You went gold

  • probably paralleling both their careers, where she became huge and yellowcard unfortunately never really took off after l&s

Where I used to have a chance I don't know you now

  • this is a reference to knowing someone before they become famous and seeing how everything about them changes after that

You left me in the water And everybody knew I would drown for you

  • here he talks about how they never went public because of her career, even though he clearly wanted and everyone they knew were pretty aware of their situation. in the end, he felt abandoned by her, even though it was probably the best for her at that point

Such a great song...

I can relate to this song so much.

"Left me in the water, and everybody knew, I would drown for you" "And everything reminds me"

"I wanted you but never told"

I tear up everytime I listen to this song... I can't wait to hear the rest of the album though!

What means actually "You went gold"?

I think it just means that whoever the "you" in the song is went off to do a lot of great things.
