Hopped a freight train out of Nashville, rode it up to Ohio
Thumbed my way to Detroit City where I stayed a month or so
Caught a ride to Chicago with a truck-driving man
I stayed there for the summer singing with a country band
Every time I hear a freight train's lonesome whistle blow
I think about that good many I've got waiting on me at home

Ended up in New York City where they travel underground
Stole a ride on a fruit truck, went through Charlotte to LA

Rode with a couple to Chattanooga going to see Ruby Falls
130 miles from Nashville well I'll get back if I have to crawl
