Doublespeak Lyrics

Doublespeak
I drug my heart with doublespeak
All my misgivings disappear
It helps to keep my conscience clean
The end justifies the means
Still I'm always careful what I hear

I don't want to know who really pulls the strings
Just as long as it's not you or me

There's a jackboot toe tap, keeping time while the children dance and play
Honey if you think you've seen a crime you just look the other way

I slowly carve my soul away
Piece by piece I sacrifice
To comfort and peace of mind
I keep my toes on the party line
There's nothing wrong dear, don't think twice

has to be the 1984 influence

This feels like a straight up musical expression of Winston and Julia's experience in 1984.

Perfectly sums up what the great George Orwell was trying to get across in his novel 1984. Great song.

Connecting this to abortion seems to be a stretch, at best. It could just as easily be linked to any atrocity - which I suppose is the point.

Really, though, I think this song simply comes down to complacency. As if Winston, despite his disillusionment, continued to keep his head down and conform - keeping his "toes on the Party line."

Pg 220 of 1984:

"Doublethink means the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them... The process has to be conscious, or it would not be carried out with sufficient precision, but it also has to be unconscious, or it would bring with it a feeling of falsity and hence of guilt... Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge ; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth."

such a great song

It's sad this album got leaked, it happens to everyone but 3 months before the album is released is ridiculous. The worst part is the fact Thrice always gives %10 of all money made from album sales to a charity, so it's ripping off a charity as well. I urge everyone to at least purchase the digital copy.

That being said, this song is awesome. To me it seems he's talking about the genocidal consensus this Country is heading and how they're destroying the world. But in order to remain sane, he'd rather not know about it. Out of sight, out of mind. That's what it seems to be about IMO. Of course, most of all Thrice is equivocal.

<3 Thrice, support them and the charity. Purchase!

Dustin's saying "There's a jackboot toe tap keeping time". A jackboot is an old type of combat boot that's tall with no laces. I know the Nazi's wore them...not sure who else did.
