Mrs. Cold Lyrics

Hey baby, Mrs. Cold
Acting so tough
Didn't know you had it in you to be hurt at all
You waited too long
You should have hooked me
before I put my raincoat on

Ok, I get it
Ok, I see
You were fronting because you knew you'd find yourself vulnerable around me
Ok, I get it
Ok, I see
You feel vulnerable around me

Hey, baby, what's going on?
You lost control and you lost your tongue
You lost me, deafened my ear
Nothing you can say is gonna change the way I feel

Ok, I get it
Ok, I see
You were fronting because you knew you'd find yourself vulnerable around me
Ok, I get it
Ok, I see
I stepped too close to your boundaries

You wanted nobody around to see
You feel vulnerable around me

Hey baby
What is love?
And what's just a game
We're both playing and we can't get enough of
We're both playing and we can't get enough of
We're both playing and we can't get enough of

I think this is definitely a love song - you could base an entire chick flick or a nice subplot to the story behind it. It's great.

I don't think "Mrs. Cold" is married to a real person, but she's married to her emotional distancing. She's afraid of relationships and the pain that they've brought her. Keeping an emotional arms-length is the only way she can protect herself. But the storyteller's broken through her barrier in a way that she didn't expect. It scares her and she doesn't know how to deal with the feelings she's staved off for so long.

"You waited too long/You should've hooked me before I put my raincoat on" I think is a great line. I can see her standing there in front of him, not saying anything but wanting to and him being completely oblivious to what she's feeling. She tries to grab him at the last minute as he's walking into the rain, but he can't feel it. The raincoat deadens him to her touch (or deafens him to her wanting to stay), which he has no reason to expect. She reads too much into his appearance of dismissal and is hurt by it.

I think in the second verse, "Mrs. Cold" confronts the storyteller about dismissing her and he realizes that she's lost her "control" of her feelings; there's a hole in her emotional barrier. It's literally a flood of emotion coming out of it at once. She can neither verbalize it or she has trouble articulating it ("and you lost your tongue")but it's not coming out in a controlled, calm manner, nor does it make sense to him ("you lost me, deaf in my ear"). I think that she tries to repair the damage of her irrationality (make things normal again) by perhaps telling him that her reaching for him was unintentional and that she doesn't really care for him. She might be even saying things to intentionally hurt him. But none of it works. He still cares for her very much and now he knows that despite her distancing, she feels the same way.

"What is love?/It's a game that we're playing and we can't get enough of," I believe, is a reference to the "relationship" they had before Mrs. Cold lost her handle on it. His flirting and showing affection and her refusal of it or pretending to be numb to it was how they both demonstrated their feelings for each other. I get the feeling that now that he really knows the truth about her feelings, the game has to change.

My Interpretation

Exactly the way I see this song :) And a exact copy of the relation that just got closed!

@ScarletLFC OMG i can so relate to Mrs. Cold lol

@ScarletLFC wow I love the raincoat imagery. I never would have thought of that

I'm not sure how much meaning I would put on the title Mrs. Perhaps it just sounds better to sing than Ms. Cold. Regardless, I'm no ice princess but I can relate to the character in this song. Feeling vulnerable around someone, never being able to stay (or even get) mad at them, wanting them, not knowing how to express that and feeling like they don't want you anymore (or never did). So you make yourself feel more in control by putting up an cool and confident front to make them think you don't need or want them anymore either.

I especially love the line "didn't know you had it in you to be hurt at all." Such a huge part of the equation - not wanting whoever it is to know that they have the ability to hurt you.

This song is bittersweet... I'm not really sure about the "Mrs" thing... maybe she's married to her coldness... She tries so hard to hide her feelings that she'd rather give him the cold shoulder in order to protect her secret, because if she had gotten to close to him, she would have cracked down.. she probably thought it was hopeless anyway, that's why she did'nt say or do anything. Or she wanted him to go after her, the cold shoulder thing is an old girly trick to get attention lol... kinda childish in a way. And maybe the guy was himself after someone else while she was falling for him, but it didn't work out either : "We're both playing and we can’t get enough of"

And when he figured her true feelings, it's too late "Deaf in my ear Nothing you can say is gonna change the way I feel" beacause he's already into someone else... even if it didn't work either, he might be in the same situation as her actually... I don't think the guy is into the cold lady now, cause he seems to say it's too late now, but at the same time, it's like he's telling her, "hey you should have done this a while ago"... so their's a lot of bitterness in this song

At the end, they both end up lonely, they both played instead of acting like adults and taking responsability of their feelings. But the ice princess will always love the mysoginous guy =)

The "Mrs." is definitely a major part of what kind of message the Kings are trying to convey. It's either a dead giveaway that she's married, or that she acts like she. In other words, unavailable, distant.

The fact that she's even flirting with the idea of being with him when she's a Mrs. whether literally or figuratively makes her vulnerable. For whatever reason she feels she has to bite her tongue ("You lost control and you lost your tongue") and must always have her guard up to preserve herself, her marriage. Either way the relationship suffers because she will never fully let go and be herself. She maintains a constant "front" because fully given into what she wants from their relationship would mean letting go (there's that magic phrase again) of her Mrs. status.

And of course, when anyone has a front, it's human nature to want to break that front, either for malicious reasons, to call someone's bluff, or to get to know that person better. In the words of Outkast, you gotta "take off your cool" to get close to anyone. Which is why it's a game that they "can't get enough of."

Just what is that incredible need to be able to breakthrough someone like that? It only happens with certain people, I feel. If it feels like the breakthrough would be worth it, like there are treasures behind that door ajar, it's hard to quit knocking. But then again if it feels like the breakthrough would be an empty goal, it's easy to not care and forget.

Allow me a slightly different interpretation. I wouldn't put too much empahsis on the 'Mrs.' and more on other parts of the song. Possibly the woman is married, possibly not.

So, we have this woman, who is distant, 'tough' and 'cold' and has been making the singer's life difficult. She's always kept her distance (or possibly even done him wrong in some way, hurt him), and now he's said: enough. (possibly publicly - "you wanted nobody around to see")

And all of a sudden that mask falls. She shows her true self:

  • "Didn't know you had it in you so be hurt at all / You waited too long / You should've hooked me / before I put my raincoat on" (i.e. before he went out into the rain and left her)
  • "You lost control and you lost your tongue / You lost me / Deaf in my ear / Nothing you can say is gonna change the way I feel" (she can't control him with her distance any more)

And now she tells him all of this, her feelings, shows how vulnerable she is ("Ok, I get it / Ok, I see etc."), but it's simply too late. She's dropped her mask (stopped fronting), shown her true self to get him back, but it's too late, he's deaf to her pleas, nothing she says changes the way he feels (cold!).

And he recognizes it is a game, this is the way it goes, and will go again. One can see this line three ways - either he is saying there is, possibly, after all, another chance for them now that she has shown her vunlerability (they can't get enough of each other, after all), or it is a general comment on how people play with each other, and sometimes the game is simply too much. The third alternative is that 'can't get enough of' refers to the distance - we play with people, and keep our distance, and because of that we can never get enough of the other. We never get to see enough until it is too late.

'I step too close to your boundaries' - I wouldn't necessarily relate this to a marriage but simply to the fact that the singer has gotten closer to her than anyone else, and that this was difficult for her to deal with. And now it is too late.

To me, this is the perfect break-up song - his sweet somehow-still-loving but clear answer to her pleas: baby, no.

obviously a romantic song about a ice princess-esqe girl, trying to break her shell

orrrrr maybe she's married (mrs. rather than a ms.) and is having a possible affair with the singer and therefore doesn't want anybody to see them together ("you wanted nobody around to see")

also the lyrics supplied above aren't totally complete... the following lyrics are from the koc forums so i give them credit ;D :

Ah well, Mrs. Cold...married woman who cant bring herself to get invloved. Feels vulnerable around the guy. Its playful really...

Didn't one of them sing about it in a church a while back? It sounds like a break-up song. Perhaps the song is about how the singer fell in love with a much younger woman. They tried to consummate their love but she had her doubts. He felt like she led him on. That's why they both played with each other. Each has what the other wants. Artist love younger women. Young women love money and attention.
