Meant To Die Lyrics

Past midnight,
Breathing in the dark.
Same strange friend comes to visit
Never intend to open the door.

You take it to places that no one's ever been,
You let it,
You let it.
Your insides caving in.
You pushed and pulled, still wanting some more.

This time I've gone all the way,
Without you.
There's nothing more I can say.

So maybe I took a little too much.
Maybe life didn't want this part of me.
It it helps to know,
I never let you go.
Sure, I lost my mind.
But I never really meant to die.

Last heartbeat's fading in the night,
Only expected darkness.
Surprised to wake and follow the light

The second you let it become a part of you,
You'll never forget it, no matter what you do.
You lost it all, still wanting some more.

This time I've gone all the way,
Without you.
There's nothing more I can say.

So maybe I took a little too much.
Maybe life didn't want this part of me.
It it helps to know,
I never let you go.
I'm sorry that I lost my mind.

So baby, I took a little too much.
Maybe you sucked the life right out of me.
I should have let you know,
I never meant to go.
Sure I lost my mind,
But I never really meant to die.

Never stay forever.
Never stay forever.
Come on.

Never stay forever.
Never stay forever.
Come on.

So maybe I took a little too much.
Maybe life didn't want this part of me.
If it helps to know,
I never let you go.
I'm sorry that I lost my mind.

So baby, I took a little too much.
Maybe you sucked the life right out of me.
I should have let you know,
I never meant to go.
Sure I lost my mind, but I never really meant to die.

In AP Bert says that the song is partly about Heath Ledger and how he accidentally died.

My Interpretation

The Heath Ledger part makes sense, but I think this is totally a song about him remembering what happened with Kate. How she died of overdose. Maybe he recently went back to drugs hxc and he started thinking about the past.

"Past midnight, breathing in the dark. Same strange friend comes to visit Never intend to open the door."

Old drug dealers stop by. Bert never intended on going back, but addiction is hard to break.

"You take it to places that no one's ever been You let it, you let it. Your insides caving in. You pushed and pulled, still wanting some more."

Talking about overdose, or taking way too many drugs at once, and remembering the intoxicating high it gave him.

"This time I've gone all the way without you. There's nothing more i can say."

Since Kate is dead (died of overdose with his baby) he's saying, "this time, I went all the way without you." He took so many drugs. And this time, he did it alone, instead of with her.

"So maybe I took a little too much. Maybe life didn't want this part of me. It it helps to know, I never let you go. Sure, I lost my mind. But I never really meant to die."

Maybe he's talking about how losing her changed his life forever ("Sure, I lost my mind. But I never really meant to die.") and so he's using the word "Die" as a more internal state rather than external. He even says, "if it helps to know, I never let you go" which is mainly why I think this is a reference to Kate's death. He's saying that even though she's gone, he still misses her/never let go/isn't over the scar it left on him.

The rest of the song is basically just about drug abuse along with the chorus. I can definitely see how he threw correlations to Heath Ledger's death in there, but I really think this is partly about Kate.

My Interpretation

I hte how everyone relates most of his songs backto her. strange friend comes to visit. never meant to open the door. death, it's an accidental death. I can see how the last part kind of could hint to her

bur Bert said it's partly about Heath. and how the guitarist of the used realized how life could end so suddenly with an accidental death an decide to lay off the hxc lifestyle he was having. after he realized what happened to Heath.

Nothing to do with Kate at all.

McCracken, who had previously lived a "reckless life," recently came to terms with how easy it is to accidentally die after the tragic death of actor Heath Ledger. The song "Meant to Die" is loosely based on the death of Ledger and not being able to say "sorry," or "I never meant to die" after an accidental death.

These are his words...period.

Well, okay then. Heh.

If this has anything to do with Heath Ledger, Kate is probably also a big part of it. Honestly, I think it's more about Kate.

This song is about someone who died from overdose, but I don't think HL was using the needle. The part "you pushed & pulled through wanting some more" Is the indication of a needle "push & pull".

My 2c.

This song's about accidentally dying from a drug overdose. It's pretty blatant.

exactly.

I was told, so I dont know if this is true, that Bert had a girlfriend who died of an overdose?

If that is true, I think that he's basically singing from her point of view.

Or at least they way he hope she felt.

Could be wrong.
