I think this song is abut being really into someone and not being able to express it or not telling them yet and thinking about them all the time.

I think the "invisible friend" is the thought of the person that is always around. And the "Sleeps so badly" is staying up to think about them.

The whole thing about her words falling short is like envisioning letting the person know and words not being adequate.

Like having a secret that you can't tell. Or just something that keeps you awake at night, thinking. Invisible friend could be that devil on your shoulder, whispering hateful things in your ear, telling you it's never gonna get better and you might as well give up. And if the problem is invisible, in your head, than it isn't real to anyone else...nobody gets it, nobody knows how to help unless the problems in their face.

It's about a long distance relationship online. That or a relationship that takes place predominantly online/puter-side.

It's not "chime alarm" or "try my love" it's "chime along, chime along"

I think that this song symbolizes a conflict with time.

Think of a clock:

"Turn the dial on my words, I can feel them fall short" like setting or manipulating the time on a clock to the point where her words are irrevlevent.

"Chime along" as in when a clock stricks 0'clock. Implies a dependance or a habit of following the clock.

"Hands move apart" when the two hands on a clock move apart as time goes on.

"make me sleep so badly, invisible friend" perhaps she can't sleep due to the sound of a ticking clock or is pressed for time and can't sleep, or is excited about something in the future and cannot sleep. Invisible friend could be that time is always there like a friend but is intangible, not a physical presence.

I'm not really sure how this reference encaptures the whole song but whenever I hear the chorus, this is what I think of.
