Learn My Lesson Lyrics
Tonight the sunset means so much
The one thing that you know, you never touch
Like the feeling, the real thing
I reach out for the sweet dream
But somehow the darkness wakes me up
I felt this emptiness before
But all the times that I've been broken
I still run right back for more
You'd think that I'd learn my lesson by now
You'd think that I'd somehow figure out
That if you strike that match
You're bound to feel the flames
You'd think that I'd learn the cost of love
And paid that price long enough
But still I drive myself right through the pain
Yeah, well it turns out
I haven't learned a thing
Oh yeah
Sometimes I think I'm better off
To turn out the lights and close up shop
And give up the longing, believing, and belonging
Just hold down my head and take the loss
You'd think that I'd learn my lesson by now
You'd think that I'd somehow figure out
That if you strike that match
You're bound to feel the flames
You'd think that I'd learn the cost of love
And paid that price long enough
But still I drive myself right through the pain
Yeah, well it turns out
I haven't learned a thing
Oh I'd learn my lesson by now
You'd think that I'd somehow figure out
That if you strike that match
You're bound to feel that flame
You'd think that I'd learn the cost of love
And paid that price long enough
But still I drive myself right through the pain
Yeah, well it turns out
I haven't learned a thing
I haven't learned a thing
I haven't learned, haven't learned
I haven't learned a thing
The one thing that you know, you never touch
Like the feeling, the real thing
I reach out for the sweet dream
But somehow the darkness wakes me up
I felt this emptiness before
But all the times that I've been broken

Just hold down my head and take the loss
You'd think that I'd somehow figure out

I haven't learned, haven't learned
I haven't learned a thing

I love this song. Every word is true for me too. We somehow repeat our mistakes when it comes to falling in love.
This is one of my favorite songs on the new album! Probably because I can relate to every word in it. It's about not really learning from your own mistakes. He's saying that he should have known better but he still makes the same decisions, knowing that it is going to cause that same pain that he knows all too well from previous experiences. And he ultimately hasn't learned a thing even throughout everything that he has been through.
"Tonight the sunset means so much The one thing that you know, you never touch Like the feeling, the real thing I reach out for the sweet dream..."
I think in those lines, he realizes that he can have so much more than what he's putting himself through. And he truly wants to believe that, but something keeps drawing him back to "running right back for more [pain]."
This song means so much to me. Every word in it I can relate too. It's like with my ex, he leads me on everytime. And I know going into it I'm going to get hurt, but I do it anyways. And each time it turns out the same. But hey, what can I say? 'No one can promise you that they won't hurt you. Cus at one point everyone does. The real promise is if the time you spent together will be worth the pain in the end.'
You know that its over, bt you keep holding on just cant deal with the loss.
To me this song is less about going back to someone who keeps letting you down, but more about not giving up on the idea of love just because you've been hurt.
The "emptiness" is the feeling of loss as the old relationship ends, but "run right back for more" is about finding a new one.
In my opinion it's a positive message and the "lesson" he's talking about is actually one you shouldn't ever learn.
