Richard Coury Lyrics

The amber flow, sweat like the glass
Crimson faces forget the past
With a swisher sweet and a fireman's hack, yeah
We can reminisce but we can never look back

Unhappiness, a lonely road, who thought success could take such a toll?
Unhappiness, a lonely road

Richard Coury put a bullet in his brain
Every day is the same, loneliness, all the haze
So we live our lives and we have our fun while he wraps his lips around the gun
Richard Coury was his name

Its 5 o'clock time to check the quotes
Down 22, rethink my do's and don'ts
Secretary, won't you hold my calls?
Cancel my appointments, I've got something to solve

Unhappiness, a lonely road, who thought success could take such a toll?
Unhappiness, a lonely road

Richard Coury put a bullet in his brain
Every day is the same, loneliness, all the haze
So we live our lives and we have our fun while he wraps his lips around the gun
Richard Coury was his name

Richard Coury put a bullet in his brain
Every day is the same, loneliness, all the haze
So we live our lives and we have our fun while he wraps his lips around the gun
Richard Coury was his name

This song is of course alluding to Edwin Arlington Robinson's poem, "Richard Cory" - which for anyone who isn't familiar, is about an incredibly wealthy and envied man who (to the surprise of everyone who 'knows' him) kills himself at the end of the poem. I believe Simon & Garfunkel also have a song based on the poem, if anyone's interested.

The song and poem are about the idea that money and material success are not a guaranteed road to a happy life. Also, it's a comment on the difference between outside appearances and true feelings (moreso in the poem than the song).

Just to add to AllChokedUp's comment: according to Wikipedia, the band spelled it Coury rather than Cory because of "a personal friend whose last name is Coury."
