An Almighty Thud Lyrics
When I lost my crown,
When it hit the ground with an almighty thud,
I went to pick it up,
But revealed my weaknesses to the crowd.
When I lost my home,
When I lost my throne to a successor!
With far more expansive plans than I ever did,
I abdicated.
You're the last thing I want.
I'd love to stay here.
You're the last thing I want.
I'd love to live here.
When I sat in my castle and I waited on news,
From one final battle that we could not afford to lose,
Then I whispered suddenly,
My greatest fears to anyone who would hear me.
You're the last thing I want.
I'd love to stay here.
You're the last thing I want.
I'm going to stay here.
When it hit the ground with an almighty thud,
I went to pick it up,
But revealed my weaknesses to the crowd.
When I lost my throne to a successor!
With far more expansive plans than I ever did,
I abdicated.
I'd love to stay here.
You're the last thing I want.
I'd love to live here.
From one final battle that we could not afford to lose,
Then I whispered suddenly,
My greatest fears to anyone who would hear me.
I'd love to stay here.
You're the last thing I want.
I'm going to stay here.

"abdicated" not "advocated"
This song is an allusion to the Shakespearean play Julius Caesar.
For me, this gem is about a relationship with a woman who was very important to them, that has fallen apart. It's hanging in the balance for a while, whether the final blow will come. But eventually the final battle is lost. Then, immediately, the focus shifts to a new woman. This woman is only addressed in the chorus. She's not his first pick at all. But he's desperate. So he settles, for now, because he needs someone in his life. Perhaps, in time, she will become very important to him as well, making him weaker and less desirable, resulting in the whole process starting over again.
