I agree whole-heartedly with nerdy_scarlett. Only wish I hadn't read the blurb from the interview with Bo about him not having "seen anything truly inspiring in awhile." Our God is a God who hides Himself. Don't look for Him in the outward matters. I think the Scripture he refers to is probably Psalms 51:17 (34:18 is similar). "A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise."
But we need to see that according to Isaiah 57:15:Â "For thus says the high and exalted One, / Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: / I will dwell in the high and holy place, / And with the contrite and lowly of spirit, / To revive the spirit of the lowly / And to revive the heart of the contrite." The Lord comes to dwell with and within these in order to give them grace (Prov. 3:34 - "to the humble He gives grace.").
Oh yeah, and grace is not some sort of outward, worldly blessings, it's Christ Himself as the divine life coming to us to be our life and enjoyment, even to be our everything; we need nothing else!

Well, personally, I can agree with Bo's comment. There are times that I feel like that. I'm not sure what you mean by "our God is a God who hides Himself", because I don't think He does. He may not always SHOW Himself to us in the ways we want or expect, but He is not hidden, He's always there. I think of 1 Kings 19:11-12. What we might deem as an inspiring/beautiful way God shows Himself (the wind, earthquake and fire), He doesn't always choose that way, instead He could come as "a gentle whisper", which, if we aren't...

When I wrote "Something Beautiful", I was in a pretty desperate state. I kinda felt like I hadn't seen anything truly inspiring in awhile. And we're taught that inspiration is just around the corner, but the problem is, it may not be until the fifteenth corner that we finally see it. We talk about that risk and we use a metaphor in the verse of being "ankle deep in the ocean" but "the water is rising quick" and the tide's coming in, y'know, am I gonna drown, in search of this thing that i've been looking for. But I believe that anything worth having, is worth the risk of losing it. The Scripture that comes to mind is that "a broken heart and a contrite spirit He has yet to deny". In the song, we don't really give the answer of how to find something beautiful. Because how you find that may be completely different than me. But i'm pretty sure it's going to start with a broken heart and a contrite spirit. This is Bo, from the band, Needtobreathe, and this is "Something Beautiful".

Thank you for what you wrote, it touched my heart! And, even though I am a Christian, I think you don't have to be a Christian to appreciate this (or other) Christian songs. Which is really rewarding, to see where people take it in their lives."

I agree, Needtobreathe is one of the best bands I've heard in a very long time. I too love pretty much all of their songs! I don't think they will be in Canada anytime soon, but I looked and the closest shows to you are in New York City, NY on Nov. 5th and Boston, MA on Nov. 6th. I would encourage you to make the drive, they are well worth it and would be thrilled to hear you drove from Canada. :)

Amazing song! Its words are so true about us letting go and needing something beautiful in each of our lives, and that gorgeous beautiful thing is Jesus.
The song is about the Holy Spirit; water and fire.
He starts out with I am only ankle deep in the Holy Spirit because he hasn't taken the 'plunge.' I knows that he needs to go all the way in but, he is afraid that he will loose his worldly affections and that they will be drowned it out. He wants to breathe them in and keep them when he tests the deep. But will God let him go?
Alternate meaning of the first part: He is walking on water but sinking. And having trust issues and afraid that he may drown. Will God save him? (this doesn't quite jive with the rest of the song).
Consume me like a fire: He desires to be consumed by the Holy Spirit. He knows that he is not outside Gods reach. He his down on his knee begging and waiting for revival.
He is no longer scared of letting go of worldly desires and taking the full plunge. God is with him.
I hate to sound negative, but I really don't like the voice of this singer. The whole time he's singing, all I can picture is the boy from Family Guy singing it.

No this song is not about a guy coming out of the closet. The something beautiful he is talking about refers to God's love. He saying that the power of God's love is reaching him. Many times in the bible they refer to the power of prayer being stronger when on your knees.
