Guns and Dogs Lyrics

We took a trip down in '87
We were looking for a place where we don't fear heaven
We got..got some guns, got some dogs
but just like them dogs, yeah the guns just get bigger

Looking to the town to show us what they got
take it to the cabin yeah we'll show ya what we got
we got space to do just what you please
if you never make it out

If I never stand on another corner trying hard to be a father
Let's be let's be love
If I never need again I'll find that sleep again
Let's be let's be love
took a trip out in '87
They were looking for a place where we don't need heaven

oooh
once you crawl in you'll never come back again
oooh
once you crawl in you'll never come back again

If I never stand on another corner trying hard to be a father
Let's be let's be love
If I never need again I'll find that sleep again
Let's be let's be love

Though I never pray god reigns today
Though I never pray god reigns today
Though I never pray god reigns today
Though I never pray god reigns today

if you catch us coming up about around the bend
if we step a little higher will we find it then
There's gotta be something roaming up about around the bend

oooh
once you crawl in you'll never come back again
oooh
once you crawl in you'll never come back again

Though I never pray god reigns today
Though I never pray god reigns today
Though I never pray god reigns today

It kind of sounds like there's an "and" before the "if I never..." lines, but I'm not sure. Can anyone tell? I've left it out for now.

My Opinion

Yeah, I hear the "and"s.

Dig this one a lot.

"If I never need again I'll find that sleep again" I've noticed the word "need" like this in a few P.tm songs now. I wondered if it relates to substance addiction, like herion. All the members of the band seem to clean in my opinion. I was also intrigued by the line "Though I never pray god reigns today ". I wondered if it meant that despite one's own religious views, or lack thereof, God still plays a significant role on the functioning of small communities. Alternatively it might suggest that despite not practising one's faith one might still consider a higher power which dictates all occurrence.

I feel like it's more about how the church brain washes people... maybe it's just me.

I think it's about an eternal trip to hell (aren't they all?).

My Interpretation

This song probably has something to do with the Iditarod sledding race in Alaska. John was way too young in '87 to have anything to do with this song, his dad however was in the results of the race that year.
