Sans Soleil Lyrics

Morning bled at the water's edge
The city was bringing me down
And my mind was on a ledge
Saying who's gonna help you now

Without sun we pull what feeds us
From the heat that's in between us
How can we expect to build a boat
Seagulls running everything

Hard, you make it hard, hard

It's all the opposite I think
The ladder runs side to side
Enough to make you want a drink
But there's no place to hide

Watching shadows within shadows within
They hide their dark selfs from the sun
And her voice is just a memory
You're not fooling anyone

Hard, you make it hard, hard
Hard, you make it hard, hard

I think this song is about the fast-paced, corporate, urban world. Specifically, how the city life makes it hard to enjoy life.

"Morning bled at the water's edge" The subject is enjoying a rural, lakeside sunset scene (morning bleeding out to night).

"The city was bringing me down" Contrasts rural beauty with urban despair.

"And my mind was on a ledge Saying who's gonna help you now?" Subject's mind is going crazy, giving up, attempting suicide

"Without sun we pull what feeds us from the heat that's in between us" heat = conflict, anger, drama what feeds us - what sustains us Modern society places value on drama. We crave it.

"How can we expect to build a boat Seagulls running everything" In my interpretation, seagulls ruining everything works better. But it seems like a statement of despair.

"It's all the opposite I think The ladder runs side to side" Corporate 'success' is all about 'moving up the ladder' as they say. Yet the lyrics seem to suggest that corporate success is a false and empty success. Hierarchy and rank only separate us from one another. The ladder turned on it's side reminds me of the value of community, side by side with those we care about.

"Enough to make you want a drink But there's no place to hide" Alcohol is used as an escape mechanism. But you can't hide from the fact that corporate 'success' is false happiness.

"Watching shadows within shadows within shadows, They hide their dark self from the sun" They hide from the sun in their concrete and steel office buildings, in their cubicles. They are (faceless) shadows within the shadows (of downtown skyscrapers). They all walk around seeing each other, but not knowing each other. Everyone is faceless, just another cog in the system.

"And her voice is just a memory you're not fooling anyone." Mother nature's voice is lost on them.

"Hard. You make it hard. Hard." Corporate life makes it hard to relax and enjoy the gift of life.

Beautiful interpretation! Its so easy to simply assume that a song is always about loving people, when there is a great big world out there to love and think about. I'm definitely feeling this.

My Interpretation

I actually disagree with one of your interpretations, I believe that when he says, "Without sun we pull what feeds us from the heat that's in between us" I think that the sun is the light of hope and drive to keep it going, and "The heat that's in between us" is referring to the passion they have. With out the hope & drive they once had, their passion and love faded away using all of their energy to keep it alive.

I think it's about a tough break-up that left one of the participants depressed and alone. When they tries to escape, they end up falling deeper. They resort to alcohol and drugs but they truly know that that isn't going to change this situation. Then the subject finally understands that no dream or hallucination can amount to the real thing and must move on. But before they go and do that, they tell their ex that it's hard not being with them, not calling them pet-names or being able to kiss them intimately.

But, of course... That's just my interpretation. I could be wrong. :)

'Hard. You make it hard. Hard.' Love this line, I'm in relationship mode at the moment, so obviously, something's really hard to deal with. What's hard I dont know.

i think the song is about trying to escape something. the song conjures the images of a city. the line's "shadows within shadows they hide their dark self from the sun." these lines are kind of like saying that people hide their true dark natures by hiding in shadows created by the city buildings. when we try to escape from this world we find that we can't and it takes a toll on the mind. and the body.

"Morning bled at the water's edge The city was bringing me down And my mind was on a ledge Saying who's gonna help you now?"

First verse gives the imagery of someone who left the city and is watching the sunrise at the beach, beach because of the coming seagulls reference.

Without sun we pull what feeds us from the heat that's in-between us How can we expect to build a boat Seagulls running everything

Absolutely love the first line. It appears to be referencing the now engulfed darkness of nighttime, as the sun has set, & when it's dark people get the essential energy they need from contact with one another.

Hard. You make it hard. Hard.

This line is somewhat open. I think it means, as the song goes on, that the breakup is now making it hard on him. & further contact or the absence is hard.

It's all the opposite I think The ladder runs side to side Enough to make you want a drink But there's no place to hide

This seems to say, I once thought I had all the answers and had everything figured out but now I don't know what to think. All my views have changed &, The ladder runs side to side, my world is completely flipped upside down. Everything's not as it should be. This is enough to make you want to get away from everything but no matter what, there is no place to hide, and you can't escape this feeling.

Watching shadows within shadows within shadows, They hide their dark self from the sun, And her voice is just a memory you're not fooling anyone

Getting so deeply lost in an emotional state that you're watching shadows within shadows within shadows. A very dark place! A mental state that wouldn't dare exist in the light of day. Her voice triggers a memory that makes you realize why you're feeling so lost & how you put on the mask in the day to everyone that everything's fine but deep down you're not & not fooling anyone

Hard. You make it hard. Hard.

Once again, reference that the girls absence or still involvement is making it hard. I like to think absence. Makes complete sense that way.
