Friends, Lovers or Nothing Lyrics
Now that we are over
As the loving kind
We'll be dreaming ways
To keep the good alive
Only when we want is not
A compromise
I'll be pouring tears
Into your drying eyes
Friends, lovers, or nothing
There can only be one
Friends, lovers, or nothing
We'll never be the in-between
So give it up
You whisper, "Come on over"
Because you're two drinks in
But in the morning I will say
Good-bye again
Think we'll never fall into
The jealous game
The streets will flood
With blood of those who felt the same
Friends, lovers, or nothing
You see, there can only be one
Friends, lovers, or nothing
We'll never an in-between
So give it up
Friends, lovers, or nothing
We can really only ever be one
Friends, lovers, or nothing
Don't you know
We'll never be the in-between
So give it up
No, we'll never the in-between
So give it up
Anything other than yes is no
Anything other than stay is go
Anything less than I love you is lying
As the loving kind
We'll be dreaming ways
To keep the good alive
A compromise
I'll be pouring tears
Into your drying eyes
There can only be one
Friends, lovers, or nothing
We'll never be the in-between
So give it up
Because you're two drinks in
But in the morning I will say
Good-bye again
The jealous game
The streets will flood
With blood of those who felt the same
You see, there can only be one
Friends, lovers, or nothing
We'll never an in-between
So give it up
We can really only ever be one
Friends, lovers, or nothing
Don't you know
We'll never be the in-between
So give it up
So give it up
Anything other than stay is go
Anything less than I love you is lying

Is it just me or John seem to be a crazy emotional relationship guy? He always makes it seem like he's this poor crying guy while she's a all too fastly movin on bitch. I love it anyway.
HAHAHAHAHAHA! That was hilarious! An "all too fastly movin on bitch"?! Wow I gotta use that...(wipes tears away) hahahaha

I have a feeling this is going to be the "Gravity" or "In Repair" type track on the new record. Both the live recordings and the studio snippet John put up are great. I can't wait to hear the full studio version with the extended outro!
Ok, this is some twist.. i believe the in-between is none of the three. i understand that, being friends would mean leaving the man-woman sexual type of relationship behind, the lovers would mean exactly the opposite, and nothing, that is. This "lovers" concept can be discussed, but i think suites John Mayer's way to love. So what is in between? In between is the jealousy, the discussions, the expectations, the disappointments, and all you may find when love is simply not enough in a relationship..
Thinking of the offer, i'd stay with the second.. haha! Cheers!
i agree. it is very 'in repair' in nature. it has the feel of the beatles 'hey jude' but in an alternate key. i'm not sure how much i like the album as a whole, but this may be my favorite track on it thus far [except for his cover of 'crossroads', which has this cool approach to it].
most if not all of the songs on the album are tinged with underwriting about a certain woman he's [mostly] been in the news with since his last release. and the fact that we all know this [and who he's writing/ singing about] takes away from that enigma or 'can be interpreted for any person' quality found in songs we all relate to so much.
anyway, it's just my opinion. when you and others get to listen to the whole album straight through, i'd love to read what others think. i give it higher marks with each additional listen...john mayer fans will definitely enjoy it. those looking for his blues/rawer side of him to come out [as i originally hoped for] is gonna have to wait for him to tour or show up on his next venture.
I take this song to mean that he and a girl were in a relationship in the past but they have broke up and now she wants a friends with benefits type situation but he knows that won't work and they either have to be FRIENDS, LOVERS, or NOTHING like the title. "Now that we are over". And then when he says that "you whisper come on over, cause your two drinks in"...and just the fact trying to keep the love alive.
He tells her to give it up on trying to have some sort of romantic relationship now that there actual relationship is over.
Yes, this song is absolutely "in repair" and "gravity" on STEROIDS! Amazing.
Oh! and does anybody else LOVE when he sings the word blood?
alright, alright. call me crazy, but when I listen to this I get this vibe that yeah, he totally liked her at one point, and yeah they were together, but that is done, and he's alright with that. BUT she wants some weird pseudo relationship, like friends with benefits-esque thing. She wants to be lovers on a physical level, and he's like bro. no... "Friends, lovers, or nothing We'll never be the in between So give it up " the in between is lovers. lovers is in between friends and nothing... I know this is pretty abstract, and not really it, but I just honestly feel like it makes since. that's why in the beginning he's telling her that he's going to make her cry.
but, in all honesty, I know that's not the meaning. but I just think John Mayer was trying to throw in a weird pun with the in between line

I think this song has a couple meanings to it.
Perhaps he knows he will become jealous if his future GF still is friends with her former lovers, so that's why he's saying you can only be ONE and he is wanting to live the same as he wants from others. Friends. Lovers. Nothing. "We can really only EVER be one" "So give it up" means he wants her to stop coming back to him, because he understands he is still vulnerable himself and is tempted to hold on to a dying relationship in an empty way.
I like this song a lot, top 3 for Battle Studies I believe. The lyrics are not outstanding but I like the message. Maybe he knows that if they are "F**kBuddies" he will fall in love again and he doesn't want that My referances, you ask?? Love Soon (IMO) was about him fallin' in love w/ a "buddy". And All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye, is like if they became lovers again then he knows on a mental level they would'nt be right for each other. So they would end up being a Make-Up/Break-Up couple.
