Mustard Gas Lyrics

Here they are
The wicked
A panic floods the field
Deliver it
Unthinkable
They play the part performing oh so well

With empty cause, they carry on

A twisted soul
An apparition
Born of a beastly (brand?)
They butcher purposely

(...?)
Beg for a reason he would allow this
Look to the sky and say
We would be better off without this
Who would allow this?

We've never felt alive
But none of us can die just when we want to
We're stuck in this disguise
With leather skin these eyes decide to haunt you
[Haunt you]
But do we haunt you?

(...?)
Beg for a reason he would allow this
Look to the sky and say
We would be better off without this
Who would allow this?

[Repeat: x8]
From the other (side?)

"We're stuck in this disguise With leather skin these eyes designed to haunt you"

These words make me thing of a gas mask. Which by the way are both cool and very creepy lol.

(...?)= Scream to the sky and beg

I'm pretty sure..it's hard to tell

I thought it was pray for a while, but it does sound like beg now that you say it. The album is out now though, so the lyric booklet should have everything.

"With leather skin these eyes decide to haunt you"

I think it's "these eyes designed to haunt you."

The last line is "You're on the other side"

and "With leather skin these eyes decide to haunt you" should be "this leather skin; with eyes designed to haunt you."

OMG! This song was soooo amazing live! I bought the new cd just because they played this and I found Casey after the show just to ask him which one it was lol these guys deserve so much credit for what they have done/already do/will do. They are so talented.

As for the song...it's about war, or at least that's the location of this character's thought process...mostly he's questioning God (the sky) on how he would allow this to happen. He also talks about fear of the enemy, fear of death and how the best he can do is ask God all about it...only when he's on the other side...or dead.

Great song. Wow.

should "deliver it" be "deliverance"?

Cover art for Mustard Gas lyrics by Dear Hunter, The

In an interview Casey said "there are 4 different characters that the Boy comes across [in Act 3: Life and Death] that are personifications of different aspects of war. The Tank, The Poison Woman, The Thief, and Mustard Gas. Though meeting these people and other much more important characters its his sort of transformation for the worse."

Song Meaning

Maybe the four people are the oracles from the delphi express? because in the poison woman she gives him poison that the boy will use later on,thus kind of predicting the future. Plus this, the tank, and the thief seem to be in the perspectives of some upper being or something, looking down on the world and its poor choices.

just a thought

During WWI, mustard gas was commonly used by all sides involved.

This song is about war dehumanizes the enemy --- you're not slaughtering humans, you're slaughtering the enemy and just trying to survive another round of gas shells.

Disregarding the title, it could be about any major war since the beginning of the last century.
