I think by 'smoke signal' they mean something like a distress flare. Meaning, they never shot it, because they were quite happy where they were and didn't want to be found, since they also refused the dolphins who offered them a ride.

i've always thought this song was about shuting out the world and being on your own not wanting other people.
I kind of think about a couple stranded on an island, maybe highschool sweethearts that were on their way to their honeymoon. Then they love living there in the wild, they don't care about things that we worry about in civilization, like how Amelia Earheart died or about what dolphins are capable of.
They forget everything from the past and just love the carefree life they're living.
