War of My Life Lyrics

Come out Angels
Come out Ghosts
Come out Darkness
Bring everyone you know

I'm not running
I'm not scared
I am waiting and well prepared

I'm in the war of my life
At the door of my life
Out of Time and there’s no where to run away

I've got a hammer
And a heart of glass
I got to know right now
Which walls to smash

I got a pocket
Got no pill
If fear hasn't killed me yet
Than nothing will

All the suffering
And all the pain
Never liked to label

I’m in the war of my life
At the door of my life
Out of time and there's nowhere to run

I'm in the war of my life
At the core of my life
I've got no choice but to fight ‘til it's done

No more suffering
No more pain
Never again

I'm in the war of my life
At the door of my life
Out of time and there's no where to run

I'm in the war of my life
I'm at the core of my life
Got no choice but to fight ‘til it's done
So Fight on, fight on everyone, so fight on
Got no choice but to fight ‘til it’s done

I'm in the war of my life
I'm at the core of my life
I've got no choice but to fight ‘til it's done

I think that this song is about living life. Maybe you're going through a rough time right now. But you know you just have to try...

Sounds like he has been backed into a corner, forced to face the scariest thing he has ever had to face. Something he has prepared for the best he can, even though he is preparing for something he has never really faced. A new chapter in his life that is a uncharted territory. Fear of the unknown. Facing it with a fragile heart easily shattered as if made of glass.

Great song. It just hit me that these lyrics:

I got a pocket Got no pill If fear hasn't killed me yet Than nothing will

Are in reference to his anxiety disorder that he used to have. I guess he still carries a pocket of anxiety pills with him at all times just in case he has a breakdown. Very deep.

Oh..I didn't know he had an anxiety disorder. that makes much more sense.

Great song. I feel like this song is about one of those moments just before one of those moments where you know that your demons are going to catch up with you and being ready for the good and bad that comes along with that...

Come out angels Come out ghosts Come out darkness Bring everyone you know

I'm not running And I'm not scared I am waiting and well prepared

The 'war of life' is having a bunch of these demons who are constantly nipping at your back and facing them with the strength of having overcome them in the past...

I got a pocket Got no pills If fear hasn't killed me yet Then nothing will

This is a powerful song. I think what's important to keep in mind is that the song is called 'War of my Life' not 'Way of my Day' to really appreciate it. Among his best work in my opinion.

Sounds like he is backed into a corner and forced to face the scariest thing he has ever had to face. Something he has prepared for even though it is uncharted territory. Not afraid of the past and terrified of the future. Waiting for the inevitable when life comes to a crossroad. He seems to be in a war with himself. His heart is fragile and easily shattered, as if made of glass.

Wow thank you ruserious. I agree though. I feel like the lyrics are very simple, but also very strong. I think that the hammer stanza and the pocket stanza are the best in the song. "If fear hasn't killed me yet/Nothing will."

I listened to the radio cast John Mayer did earlier this week on Sophie's show, and he debuted the whole album, song by song. About this one, he said he wanted to write a song about overcoming fears, so I think it's a testimony to how you're terrified to move forward, but you know that you've made it this far and you've just got to keep going, even though you aren't entirely sure where you're going (line re: I've got a hammer, but which walls to smash?) Like, there's a ton of uncertainty, but you've got faith in your self and your abilities, so overall there's a positive tone.

Hi elsasparklesa, Thanks a lot for telling us about Sophie's show, Great song, there's a great emotion behind all the songs of Battle Studies! awesome songwritig!

If you have followed John from day one, this song will make a lot of sense. He's done with running, hiding, he's finally realizing that he's gotta keep going with whatever emotion it is that he's feeling. He's a deep soul- he feel a lot and I think he's just done with wasting his time hurting. He's accepting his past and his current emotions. It's a fantastic breath of fresh air..
