Midnight Swim Lyrics

A midnight swim
Is what I'm needing
A careless whim
A fast, full feeding

I take to the deep
When the last sentinel's asleep
Gotta break out and find
What the day left behind

So into blue
Begin an ark
Luminous you
Truant spark

I take to the deep
When the last sentinel's asleep
Gotta break out and find
What the day left behind

Water and salt
Secrets like new
Here I exalt
A midnight swim

I take to the deep
When the last sentinel's asleep
Gotta break out and find
What the day left behind

I really feel like this song is about a certain feeling you get. There's this gnawing hunger that is just going to lead to bad things occuring later on that night. For me, personally, it's a time when I decide to get drunk and make out with boys. It occurs when I'm terribly bored. When I'm in that mood, my friends can't stop me. I'm a holy tornado of energy and destruction. It's like I've got something inside of me that needs to be fed, and once its hunger is sated, then I'm back to being my normal self again. Or another way of looking at it is to realize all of a sudden that I've been missing something in my life, and I'm quite determined to find it that day or night. But it's something that's been gnawing at you, pushing below the surface, but it hasn't quite arisen until, boom!, you get the message, "Something integral to life is missing! Sound the alarm! Let's find it immediately!"

O R Brandon Boyd could mean it very literally, like taking a swim in the ocean at midnight and the feelings and images that invokes. But that's the thing I love about Incubus - their lyrics usually have multiple meanings :)

I think the song title "Midnight Swim" is a clever way of changing the wording of "midnight's whim." Note the lyrics, "a careless whim." An act of deviant exploration perhaps?

I second this. I've thought about that loads of times. This is an awesome and energetic song.
