New Orleans Lyrics

Well I went south with a case of survival
To amend my heart that's paper thin
You see I felt her words and her images filed
I'm gonna carry my heart to New Orleans

I have no home to go so I wander awhile
From coast to coast, from sin to sin
From the coldest shores to the warmest islands
Been around the world back to New Orleans

Well she's got pride like a million lions
She's got a scar on her velvet face
She's got a smile like a newborn child
She's gotta walk a Stoic grace

I never slept that night until my arrival
I romanticized a long embrace
You see I lost my tongue and burned my bible
But I made it back home to New Orleans

Well I held my break and I swam for miles
When all was lost and hell took place
You see it rained all night and the city she flooded
It rained all night in New Orleans

Correct lyrics straight from the booklet:

Great song, the best punk rock song on the album for sure, too bad there aren't too many... It kind of sux that Lars only has one song on the entire record, just like Matt. Way too much Tim in my opinion. As much as I love him as a songwriter, but he already did most of the vocals on Indestructible, one solo record and two Transplants records as well, while Viking came out 5 years ago with nothing new in sight.

Fucking great song. I think the meaning is pretty clear. Standard tribute to some woman using the troubled New Orleans as the metaphor. Sometimes shit happens to great people (cities) and sometimes we get caught up in it, or don't get the girl. It's hopeful though, She's gotta walk a stoic grace... good luck NO except that the engineer in me says we really shouldn't rebuild it.

I hope this song gets some exposure.

Okay, it may not be about a woman; just the city. I especially like the "lost my tounge and burned my bible" line. As if arriving in New Orleans, he was speechless and had lost faith in a god who would allow the kind of travesty that was Katrina.

Fuck jesus!

This is really a beautiful song, the best on the album. Obviously a tribute to New Orleans and the people of the city. Though I generally prefer Tim and Matt vocally over Lars, I think Lars was perfect for this song (Tim does the vocals on the accoustic cd). Interesting fact: the bonus dvd shows this was originally titled "Love Song For New Orleans".
