House of Diamonds Lyrics
One morning you wake to find
you are shackled to your bed
and bound and gagged
Oh my, what a predicament
And further, further on
the day grows long
Your sister marries a nice young man
and they build a house of diamonds
But the sun is snuffed by the curtains
Can't someone come untie you?
But there is too much work to do
Yes, they all admire you
You are free
You are already free
You are already free
You are free from the greed of your culture
You are free from the lust for the luster
of the diamond houses in the city's cluster
From your own ego, from your own blunder
Yes, you own the stars, you own the thunder
But you have to share
Yes, you own the stars, you own the thunder
But you have to share it all
You are free
You are already free
You are already free
you are shackled to your bed
and bound and gagged
Oh my, what a predicament
the day grows long
Your sister marries a nice young man
and they build a house of diamonds
Can't someone come untie you?
But there is too much work to do
Yes, they all admire you
You are already free
You are already free
You are free from the lust for the luster
of the diamond houses in the city's cluster
From your own ego, from your own blunder
But you have to share
Yes, you own the stars, you own the thunder
But you have to share it all
You are already free
You are already free

I think this song tells the story of two siblings. One who is sort of an workaholic and one who lives her life happily with a person she loves. The meaning is, basically, enjoy your life. It seems to have a hint of anti-capitalistic mentality, which is a bit aversive to me, but the music is just enchanting.
I think this song sums up the essence of Bowerbirds.
this song makes me feel like you shouldnt want to outshine your sibilings and just live your own life.
and the music is just amazing!
to me this song is about a person who feels imprisoned by society's expectations. she sees people close to her (the sister), go and get married and do the sorts of things that are expected of them, but this is not what she wants for her own life. but the chorus "you are free, you are already free" talks about how her individuality and lack of desire to settle down with a "nice young man" the way society says she should is not actually a mindset that should make her feel imprisoned, but a mindset that she is actually free from society's stupid ways and can see beyond things like greed and so rather than feeling "shackled" and alienated, she should feel empowered to be a part of society to change it.
