The song is saying that the girl is always starting arguments with him for no reason. Almost as if she enjoys arguing with him. She keeps arguing but he doesn't ever retaliate so the arguments are all one-sided.

Nick is obviously saying that someone got ticked off at "this other person" and now this person is telling lies to try and make the "other person" look bad. But the "other person" just ignores it because he/she is the better person and doesn't want to look foolishly anymore. And if you all know what we retaliation is?
