Hold On With My Open Hands Lyrics
If I had known you better I could probably get my money back
From that old preacher and his organist who said she knew my dad
When we were younger and you promised me that you would wear my ring
But you were 14 years behind the time when you can mean such things
But I will hold on with my open hands
But I will hold on with my open hands
And I suppose I should decide what I can do with all your clothes
And closets full of all the places you and I will never go
Is it misguided that I can recall the day you left my bed
And asked your mom and dad if maybe you could stay with them instead
But I will hold on with my open hands
But I will hold on with my open hands
From that old preacher and his organist who said she knew my dad
But you were 14 years behind the time when you can mean such things
But I will hold on with my open hands
And closets full of all the places you and I will never go
And asked your mom and dad if maybe you could stay with them instead
But I will hold on with my open hands

this song is talking about when william married his wife. the first stanza talks about how the church he was married in looked like and the people in it. he is talking about this because he seems to regret it in some ways. this song also talks about william and hes loves childhood and how they were in love because he says "promise me that you would wear my right" in a way he is saying she promise him that she wouldn't let him down and love him. but 14 years have past and things have changed. the ending talks about how he is left out on his own and asks his in-laws if he can stay with them. he says he will hold on with open hands, meaning he will not let her go even with what has happened
This song is definitely about divorce - either written from his father's perspective during William's parents' split or, more likely, about his own divorce.

I take it that "hold on with my open hands" means that he is holding on by remaining willing to work things out, but that he is not going to force it. Pretty straight forward song.
