He Said He Had a Story Lyrics
There was a silver circle sign, and she was standing at the door
we pressed our way right through the crowd, or pace was quickened to her floor,
there was a single fading light, and there was silk all on the walls,
she had a lot of love to give, I was prepared to take it all
"And what did she do next?"
She had disrobed, and she was waiting on the floor.
She asked me what it was I want, I thought that I wanted it all.
"What did you say?"
I said "Stand up and move your body to the bed."
She quickly stood, and slowly turned, and
here's exactly what she said.
"Please be soft and sweet to me,
This life has not been good you see
It's hard with such a history
Buried in misery."
"And what did you do next?"
I broke a smile reminding that I paid her well.
Her lips returned, and then I felt her hands unbuckling my belt.
"So was it good?"
Oh, it felt like heaven, but I'm sure she was in hell-
I made it clear I'd get my money's worth out of the goods she sells.
Break and bind yourself to me,
Deliver what you've sold. You see
that
I will only take from you, and use it up.
I'll use you up.
What was your name?

I agree, the silver circle sign is definitely the dime. But I think the "he" in "he said he had a story" is the dear hunter's father telling him about how he met Ms Terri. This cd seems to bring back up the father a lot.
Theres so many typos here, heres the actual lyrics:
There was a golden circle chip, and it was chillin in the bag we ripped our way right through the plastic, our pace was not dampened by the lag, there was a single feigning light, and there was crumbs all on the walls, she had a lot of chips to eat, I was prepared to eat them all
"And what did she do next?"
She had crunched, and she was chewing on the floor. She asked me what it was I want, I thought that I wanted some pringles.
"What did you say?"
I said "Stand up and move chips to the bed." She quickly stood, and dropped the bags, and heres exactly what she said.
"Please be soft and sweet to them, theyre fagile and will break you see its easy when they're so damn crunchy."
"And what did you do next?"
I broke them all reminding her that I paid for them. Her lips pouted, and then I reached into the bag.
"So was it good?"
they tasted like heaven, and I was captured by the smell- and I also made it clear I'd eat my weight out of the peanuts she deshelled.
Break and feed your chips to me, deliver all cheetos you see that I will only take from you, and nom them up. Ill nom them up
Where is the dip?
This song is sung by the Father, not the Dear Hunter, recalling his experiences with a whore at the dime. "What was your name?" Well, in all likelihood, it was a mystery, or rather, a Ms. Terri. ;-) Given The Dear Hunter's past, this gives him the proper motive to want to kill him, in addition to stealing his sons identity, to enter a new beautiful life. The boy and his innocence...
This song is about the boy and probably a few other soldiers and this one man tell's them all about a story he had where he went to a brothel and everything that the man says reminds the boy of his past or things he's seen or heard. "silver circle sign" the boys been to the dime he would recognize this. Maybe the boy recognizes the words used by the woman the man does the dirty with and recognizes them as words his mother (Ms. Terri) would use. Then I'm assuming that at some point in the boy's childhood the question of his father came up which I think is actually the subject of one of the songs in Act I so maybe Ms. Terri told the boy the father's name when he was a boy so the boy hearing all these things that sound so familiar he puts them all together and asks the man his name.
Just what comes to mind when I hear this song. So the boy now knows this man is his father and he definitely doesn't like him.
Dude. That freaking comment about the lyric correction with pringles was so genius, I died
i think this is about Portly's experience with Ms.Leading because the song "This Beautiful Life" after is about The Boy, discovering such offensive things, and how he couldn't confront Portly, because every soldier had pride in him. The song is how he wants to go back to the home above the lake
I have always been under the impression this is in reference to Ms. Terri, actually. This is The Dear Hunter's father talking. Just a symbolic lyric "what was your name?" implies it's a mystery, as in Ms. Terri (heh heh)

and i feel awful for not knowing this, but who is portly??

I'm pretty sure that it's "misery" rather than "mystery".
It is. Casey wrote mystery by mistake. I'll change it.
Silver circle sign
definately the Dime The guy who saved the boy's life is talking about Ms. Leading
It sounds to me like the Dear Hunter re-telling his story to the person who saved him. The person is inquiring about the story and the Dear Hunter is lying about it, saying that he wasn't naive, that she was the fragile one, and that he was there to just have his way with her and then leave.
We know that it is actually the other way around. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story!!
I have to say, I completely agree with ascendings interpretation. So far as I can tell, this album focuses primarily on the dear hunter taking back his life. This song is followed immediately by "This Beautiful Life," in which he states that "It wasn't meant that I would discover such offensive things," i.e., his true past. Furthermore, later on the album in "Father," the references to the father, the mother, and the son, seem to indicate the story of the dear hunter, his father, and his mother, Ms. Terri. What's more, later on in the album it would seem that...

What's more, later on in the album it would seem that the dear hunter murders his father using the poison acquired from "The Poison Woman." This can be seen from the line "I knew there was a reason I kept this." When combined with the images on the "post cards" that come with the album, it is possible to discern that there is indeed a poisoning taking place. This song concerns the discovery that the dear hunter makes concerning his origins, and indeed, the silver circle sign references The Dime. But the woman concerned is not, in fact, Ms. Leading. It is Ms. Terri.
If he kills the father (as in paternal father or holy father?) the last songs wouldnt make sense that he returns to a mother AND a father. I figured he'd left the war and returned to a family that wasn't his, in hope to start a new life. I'm taking the last lines in Father very literally "...she always loved her son, and you look like him." Implying he's assuming the life of his dead friend, the one who saved him.
