Northern Lights Lyrics
i don't need from you a waterfall of careless praise
and i don't need a trophy for all the games i've played
but all i want is your eyes
in the morning as we wake
for a short while
and i don't need you to catch my wanderin mind
and i don't expect a southern girl to know the northern lights
and all i want is your eyes
in the morning as we wake
for a short while
and i do need the wind across my pale face
and i do need the fern to unfurl in the spring
and i do need the grass to sway
yes i do need to know my place
but all i want is your eyes
in the morning as we wake
for a short while
and i don't need a trophy for all the games i've played
in the morning as we wake
for a short while
and i don't expect a southern girl to know the northern lights
in the morning as we wake
for a short while
and i do need the fern to unfurl in the spring
and i do need the grass to sway
yes i do need to know my place
in the morning as we wake
for a short while

i love this tune. to me it's about a person not needing his lover to be perfect, or expecting her to be insanely intelligent or false, or to change in any way. he is just happy with her for who she is. and in the chorus i can just imagine them lying in a bed as the sun rises and he just wants to look into her eyes and share the moment with her. it's absolutely beautiful.
Actually... I don't think anyone has hit on what this really is saying. I think HE is saying, he doesn't need to be changed, helped, or given anything. Other than that moment in the morning when two people are never more themselves, and he needs the seasons to move, and he needs to know he's alive, but not from another human being.
I disagree. I don't believe the artist would mean that knowing human nature. We all rely on others to one degree or another and depending on the situation. We are not solitary creatures. He doesn't want lies or kudos, but he does want something.

i concur with jiggadywig.
side note, its abnoxious to be showered with careless praise.
everything about this song is perfect.
and i don't think i've ever (fully) understood what a song like this (really) means, at least in my life, until now.
therefore, very few songs are as close to my heart as this one is.
9 comments? Just 9? This track is beautiful. I especially like the line about not wanting "careless praise." There's little worse than that.
Great song. Best by Bowerbirds, in my opinion.
great song. i don't think anything stands up to My Oldest Memory, however.
I don't need you to catch, my wandering mind. And I don't expect a southern girl to know the northern lights.
Beautiful line.
The last verse is also something that really catches me every time.
He just wants her...period. It's a gorgeous track that is the band's best. This song is soooooo beautiful.
isn't it simply "i do need the fur, to unfur in the spring"?
