Wanna pack your bags, something small
Take what you need and we disappear
Without a trace we'll be gone, gone
The moon and the stars can follow the car
And then when we get to the ocean
We gonna take a boat to the end of the world
All the way to the end of the world

Oh, and when the kids are old enough
We gonna teach them to fly

You and me together
We could do anything, baby
You and me together
Yes, yes
You and me together
We could do anything, baby
You and me together
Yes, yes

You and I, we're not tied to the ground
Not falling but rising like rolling around
Eyes closed above the rooftops
Eyes closed, we're gonna spin through the stars
Our arms wide as the sky
We gonna ride the blue all the way to the end of the world
To the end of the world

Oh, and when the kids are old enough
We gonna teach them to fly

You and me together
We could do anything, baby
You and me together
Yes, yes
You and me together
We could do anything, baby
You and me together
Yes, yes

We can always look back at what we did
All these memories of you and me, baby
But right now it's you and me forever girl
And you know we could do better than anything that we did
You know that you and me, we could do anything

You and me together
We could do anything, baby
You and me together
Yeah, yeah
Two of us together
We could do anything, baby
You and me together
Yeah, yeah
Two of us together
Yeah, yeah
Two of us together
We could do anything, baby

Something small
Until we reach the end of the world

    There's a bit missing:

We can always look back at what we did Always the memory of you and me baby But right now it's you and me forever girl You know we can do better than anything that we did You know that you and me we can do anything

This song is beautiful, amazing, wonderful...I simply cannot stop listening to it. It's about escaping with the one you love to forever. The last part nods to leaving behind the past and just looking forward to what you will have together. And the line "When the kids are old enough we're gonna teach them how to fly"...they're going to teach how they love and live to their children...I love it!

    A brilliant album.

I'm pretty sure it's about his wife/ to his wife.

This song has a very deep meaning to me personally. I have been in love with my best friend since middle school... there was never a good time to tell her and last week I find myself in the situation of professing my love to her. She is married but seperated, 2 kids... 2 kids that I absolutely love. I see this song as myself convincing her to be with me. We could do anything together, and when the kids are old enough we can teach them to fly! "Say Goodbye" used to be the song I would play and think about her, and now it is this. I read a Dave quote somewhere that said "A guy and a girl can be just friends, but at one point or another they will fall for eachother. Maybe temporarily, maybe at the wrong time, maybe too late or maybe even forever"... how is it that he is always so on the money?

At the very end there is a repeated sax part. This whole album is pretty much a tribute to the former fallen comrade LeRoi Moore. Since it is the same thing over and over, is it known whether this is the last of LeRoi's sax playing or is it a Jeff Coffin tribute?

Either way, it is very fitting to way to end the whole album!

I just can't stop listening to this song. The kick drum during the chorus(its very soft, hard to hear) seems to always go right in beat with my heart. ITS GREAT! This song is beautiful. Its about finding the one you love and raising kids and spending your future with them. I think i heard on the Fuse Documentary that was on all this week, this song was about him and his wife.
I recall him saying something like this - this whole album is dark and bring out a lot of deep stuff, not until the last song about my wife where it gets a bit brighter.

Not Dave's best work lyrically by any stretch of the imagination. But it's a fun song with a nice accoustic guitar sound. It is about a couple sending their kids off in the world and living out their retired lives together.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
