Dive In Lyrics

I saw a man on the side of the road
with a sign that read 'will work for food'.
Tried to look busy, 'til the light turned green...

I saw a bear on TV and his friends were all drowning
cause their homes were turning to water...

A strange, kinda sad, big old bear
surely would happily eat me
he'd tear me to pieces that bear...

Wake up, sleepy head.
I think the suns a little brighter today
Smile and watch the icicles melt away and see the water rising...
Summers here to stay, and all those summer games will last forever
Go down to the shore, kick off your shoes, dive in the empty ocean.

Tell me everything will be OK if I just stay on my knees and keep praying
believing in something...
Tell me everything is all taken care of by those qualified to take care of it all.

Wake up sleepy head
I think the suns a little brighter today
Smile and watch the icicles melt away and see the waters rising...
Summers here to stay, and that sweet summer breeze will blow forever
Go down to the shore, kick off your shoes, dive in the empty ocean.

One day, do you think we'll wake up in a world on it's way to getting better?
and if so can you tell me...
how?

I have been thinking that lately the blood is increasing
the tourniquets not keeping hold in spite of our twisting
though we would like to believe we are
we are not in control
though we would love to believe

Wake up sleepy head
I think the suns a little brighter today
Smile and watch the icicles melt away and see the water rising...
Summers here to stay, and those sweet summer girls will dance forever
Go down to the shore, kick off your shoes, dive in the empty ocean.

k well if you all really listen to the lyrics you will realize that this beautiful song is about Global Warming... take some time to realize.... I saw a bear on TV and his friends were all drowning cause their homes were turning to water...ice caps melting...

Tell me everything will be OK if I just stay on my knees and keep praying believing in something... (no body does n e thing about global warming..) Tell me everything is all taken care of by those qualified to take care of it all... global warming experts say that we have to do something now but the government thinks otherwise... This is dave using sarcasm towards the government... tell me everything will be taken care of by those qualified(government) to take care of it all...

Wake up sleepy head I think the suns a little brighter today Smile and watch the icicles melt away and see the waters rising... Summers here to stay, and that sweet summer breeze will blow forever Go down to the shore, kick off your shoes, dive in the empty ocean.

wake up people... the o-zone ..... the suns a little brighter? ha... smile and watch the icicles melt away and see the waters rising....... its gone way too far now to do n e thing about it.... i think dave is trying to say hey live happy and free cause you never know when the end can come... correct me if im wrong.... but first think about my interpretation of dive in

SERIOUSLY!!!! So Dave has no clue what hes talking about, but you do....sounds like a conservative KNOW IT ALL...yeah i agree he does a great job with songs about love, but he did an amazing job on taking a dark issue and putting joyful light into it...even if you dont like the message of the song you have to appreciate the music...personally i think its one of the best songs in the album...if you cannot put your personal opions aside and really hear, see, and fell the song then you missed out on the beauty and i feel sorry for you.....FACTS!!! HA...cooling my ass...fact and fiction work as a team...now if you knew where those lyrics came from i would give you 1 point for credit...and try not to google it...heres a hint...(in your eys) hes another liberal tree hugger that doesnt know what hes talking about...but he has done sooooo much for his community and the environment....you have a nice day oh and go get a jacket cause its gonna get colder and colder...hell just get a coat from a polar bear they will all be dead soon enough cause its getting soooo cold the ice is melting :) peace

the song very simply means that humans need to change if we want to save ourselves and our home. We are apathetic to other people and to our world. DMB is environmentally conscious and this song is mainly about global warming and our indifference toward it.

"One day, do you think we'll wake up in a world on it's way to getting better?"

I find it hard to agree with those posters who see this song as uplifting or positive. In my opinion, the song is ironic and depressing. The bouncy chorus is a sarcastic take on man's carefree attitude about the environment. Dave is saying "go ahead, just keep kicking of your shoes, don't worry about the fact that the environment is collapsing all around us." And Dave is not saying that he is going to pray for things to get better. He is saying that he wishes it could be that easy. But it's not. He is hoping that people will wake up and change, but he doesn't sound very optimistic on that point. "Do you think we'll wake up in a world on it's way to getting better?" No answer.

And by the way to the dmbcwalk. Your comments about conservatism and liberalism make no sense. Conservatism is about moving forward with the utmost care. Protecting. Conserving. A true conservative would take even the smallest chance of global warming seriously. Not to mention the fact that hundreds of studies have well documented the heating of the globe - it's not even up for debate anymore. The environment is something that all people need to join together to protect, conservative or liberal, whatever the stupid labels may mean. Unbelievable that people are still actually saying that global warming doesn't exist. That is the point of this song.

@ DMBCWALK just to clarify...

If you knew anything about the cooling over the past 10 years then you would know that it is only because of the seasons of the Sun. There are 2 seasons of the Sun, each which last around 10 years; the seasons are High Sun Spot and Low Sun Spot Activity. This activity is taken into account when studying global climate; and yes, you guessed it, since 1998 we have been in Low Sunspot activity which causes the retina of the Sun cooler than during High Sun Spot Activity. This Low has lasted longer then normal, about 12 years and is expected to change within the next couple years. The activity of sun spots is controlled by the suns magnetic field caused by rotation.

So you are correct, the Earth has felt cooler for the past 10 years but if you look at the past 100 years, this 10 year cool is higher then previous 10 year cool outs.

Not a single expert out there claims that there is no global warming; only Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck and other morons like that do.

The one part of the song that nobody has talked about and that confuses me is this:

"I have been thinking that lately the blood is increasing, the tourniquet's not keeping hold in spite of our twisting, Though we would like to believe that we are, we are not in control Though we would love to believe"

I understand the first two lines: Metaphorically speaking of our efforts to fight back global warming and that they fall short

But what does he mean by "we are not in control"??? -Does he mean that global warming is just natural and that we can't change it?

hey :) what he's trying to say is that we are, in fact, in control of what's going wrong in the environment, but we try to convince ourselves we aren't to feel better ("though we would love to believe..")

this is kinda confusing..the first 2 stanzas sound like people in general usually do not show compassion for their fellow man (as it opens with one guy trying his best to ignore a homeless man trying to get whatever he can, but then feeling sorry for a bear--which although is one of gods creatures---would tear him to shreds)

then the next verse, it sounds like he believes everything will be taken care of by someone else. when in reality you have to be that person and at least try to contribute

that sounds accurate to me, but the chorus i dont understand at all--it sounds like just relax...and then the last verse with the blood

This song is great. Dave realizes that everything has to end and everything is only temporary in life. With this in mind dave persuades himself with this song, that everything is gonna be alright, and all he has to do us prat and stay faithful through it all. Although dark, Great song on a great album. RIP leroi

"Go down to the shore, kick off your shoes, dive in the empty ocean." Go out and take part in the world -- the song circles around the environment and global warming "Smile and watch the icicles melt away and see the waters rising...summers here to stay, and that sweet summer breeze will blow forever..." Can't just rely on everyone else to fix things, you have to help out too..."wake up sleepy head" and realize what's going on in the world.

AGGREEE!! well said. It is the nature of many people in this county to think that someone is going to help them and just take care of the problems we face. When really these problems effect everyone and were in this together. We need to "wake up" and take action. I think the chorus is talking about global warming but also give the chill summer vibe that everyone loves to hear from DMB.

I thought the same thing Youthrillme....

saw a man on the side of the road with a sign that read 'will work for food'. Tried to look busy, 'til the light turned green.......This explains how people are in their own little selfish worlds...who knows what happen to this man and why hes asking for food...gov, drugs, economy, who knows he could have been karma in diguise...but people just pass him and judge.

I saw a bear on TV and his friends were all drowning cause their homes were turning to water.................Polar Bears are in danger of disappearing due to the rapid climate changes...and its sad to see these creatures that have no chance against the humans need for things they want, but dont need.

Wake up, sleepy head. I think the suns a little brighter today Smile and watch the icicles melt away and see the water rising... Summers here to stay, and all those summer games will last forever Go down to the shore, kick off your shoes, dive in the empty ocean..............Climate change will give us the summers we long for, but careful what u wish for u might just get it.

I love how he take a song that starts out so beautiful as a love song would and it turns out to be a sarcastic tone to this worlds inevitable destiny.....this new album has it all love, sex, end of the world, man the energy is sick.....LOVE IT
