So Long My Friend Lyrics

This has no sense of urgency
this is no act of violence
No, I'm starting over

This place has nothing for me
Fake friends, false sex, no money
Woah, I'm starting over

He said this ship is sailing
and I'm done explaining

Don't break my fall, I've thought it all
Over, Don't break my fall, I've thought it all
Over.

This place has nothing for me, I think I'll drive by only
No, He's starting over
Never had life handed to me
Fake friends, false sex, no money
No, he's starting over

He said this ship is sailing
And I am done explaining

Don't break my fall I've thought it all over
Don't break my fall I've thought it all..over.

He said this ship is sailing, and I am done explaining.

Don't break my fall, I've thought it all over.
Don't break my fall, I've thought it all over.
Don't break his fall, he's thought it all over.
Don't break his fall, he's thought it all over.

Definitely one of the best songs on the album. I think this song's meaning is pretty obvious. He is sick of everyone around him - all his fake friends and the meaningless sex - so he is leaving to get away from it all. I love the part "He said this ship is sailing, and I am done explaining". I'm not sure if this is the image he meant, but it brings to mind a vivid image of the captain of a ship telling him the ship is about to leave, so he walks away from everyone trying to stop him and gets on the ship.

Does anyone have any ideas about why he switches from talking about himself to talking about someone else?

"This place has nothing for me Fake friends, false sex, no money" These lyrics sound to me like someone who is very jaded with their surroundings.

"Don't break my fall, I've thought it all over" This sounds like someone who's ready to take the plunge of a drastic change to their life.

"This place has nothing for me, I think I'll drive by only" ...I'm pretty sure the lyric is "I think I'll try Wyoming," which further supports the idea that this song is about starting out fresh somewhere new.
