when i said i won't be burned what did i know?
as my mouth produced the words i felt the glow
and her fire so invisible it first began to show
and i was blind but now i see that i'm much blinder than i used to be
i said i won't be burned how could i tell
that my words were but a curse to cast that spell
as my limbs began to bend i counted every leaf that fell
i was tall but now i know that i'm much smaller and i'll have to grow
i said i won't be burned and i was bold
but the tables have been turned and i've been told
by a voice as clear as crystals on the moon and twice as old
that i'll never sleep again the way i used to sleep back when you heard me weep
i wont' be burned in such a tone
that i reap the dying seeds that i have sown
and the honey just goes bitter when i feed myself alone
and i was wise but what'd i think
i'd be a fool to ever think i won't be burned
when i said i won't be burned how i was wrong
and i knew i had it coming all along
there's a place i cannot reach but i believe i once belonged
and i was high when i was there and i had angels in my hair
until i said i won't be burned and now they're gone
so i found the point that's farthest from the sun
and the absence of all light can strike the fear in anyone
and i was strong but now i'm weak i'd be a fool to ever think
i won't be burned
