Happy You're Gone Lyrics

Breathe me every time you close your eyes
Taste me every time you cry
This memory will fade away and die
Just for today, breathe me and say goodbye

How many times? How many times?
Now I can't look you in the eye
Now I can't look you in the eye
How many times? How many times?
Now I can't look you in the eye

See me, in the eyes of another's child
Turn away, when you see me walking by
Once in a while
This melody will fade away and die
Just for today, breathe me and say goodbye

How many times? How many times?
Now I can't look you in the eye
Now I can't look you in the eye
How many times? How many times?
Now I can't look you in the eye

And I don't even want to try
My my
'Cause every word from you is a lie
My my

How many times? How many times?
Now I can't look you in the eye
Now I can't look you in the eye
How many times? How many times?
Now I can't look you in the eye

"how many times" in my opinion refers to how many times a guy/girl's partner cheated, now he/she can't look the other in the eye, because he/she is disgusted. "breath me" and "taste me" i think refers to the person wanting the cheater to keep thinking of him/her and continue to feel bad about what they've done. they want their revenge.

the song is clearly not about steve. i don't really think it's about anyone in particular.

I completely agree with this. I don't get why people think it is about Steve. Brilliant song and great album.

The answer to what 'How many times' refers to is given at the end of the song. It's revealed that the protagonist's partner has lied to him too often. And that's the cause of why he's breaking up with her. If we look at the title, then we already know the resolution: The protagonist broke up with her and is relieved that she's gone. I think the turning point for him was discovering that she had lied to him again. But that's not mentioned in the song. The lyrics are all about the break up itself and that she'll forget him in which she should find comfort, but the way he's saying it is very hurting, but I guess that just reflects how hurt he's feeling himself.

My Interpretation

The meaning's obvious, so don't hurry to say it was written for Steve Hewitt... Brian and Stef can't be happy he's gone after all those years. I'm sick of people saying "it's for steve", I mean ok, maybe they hadn't had an 'amicable' split up, but it's kinda cruel to call one of your 'husbands' cheap and nasty fake and Brian+Stef can't be that cruel..

well when i saw them in shepherds bush just under two weeks ago, after brian was announcing all the band members, then went on to say "this is a song about nobody in particular", it's pretty obvious who he was talking about. Brian writes some pretty sarcastic lyrics, so i don't think you can take it so literal all the time

Lucky you!!!! My nice parents won't let me go to their concert this year. Brilliant... I'm SOOO jealous!!!

i was there too lol. yeah i remember him saying that, it made me automatically think it was about steve.

this is so sad yet so beautiful. :/

teenagewife : i agree with you; i think it's so stupid when people say like every song was written for steve. same with BFTS.

Ha, I guess I'm not the only one.

oh yeah, taking it a bit far to say every single song is about steve, obviously they aren't but it's almost expected to have a few songs about him, he was a big part of their lives after all, gotta let him have some songs lol

i'm sure there are songs about him but i doubt brian would make it so... obvious. :p
