First of the Gang to Die (Morrissey cover) Lyrics

You have never been in love
Till you see the stars
Reflected in the resevours

And you have never been in love
Till you see the dawn rise
Behind the home for the blind

We are the pretty, petty things
And your standing on our street

Where Hector was the first of the gang with the gun in his hand
And the first to do time
The first of the gang to die
Oh my

Where Hector was the first of the gang with the gun in his hand
And the first to do time
The first of the gang to die
Oh my

You have never been in love
Till you see the sun light drawn
Over smashed human bone

We are the pretty, petty things
And your standing on our street

Where Hector was the first of the gang with the gun in his hand
And the first to do time
The first of the gang to die
Such a silly boy

Where Hector was the first of the gang with the gun in his hand
And a bullet in his gut
The first lost life to go under the stars

And he stole from the rich and the poor
And the not very rich and the very poor
And he stole our hearts away
He stole our hearts away
He stole our hearts away

Hmm, I always thought the lyrics were "Pretty penny thieves" not "Pretty petty things". It sounds like it could be both. I think I'm wrong though.

This is, of course, a fantastic Morrissey song, but I think Zee Avi really makes it her own with her ukulele playing and vocal style. I think the Morrissey version is wry and cinematic, but the Zee Avi version is melacholy, with the kind of bravado that hides fragility.
