No matter how hard I try, I always think he's saying 'We're getting wise trying to find our feet' and even though these are the stock standard lyrics put on the band's site, I just lack the ability to hear 'We're getting wise and finding our feet' :( Lovely song! I love when he says 'awful clever'.

yeah, it's weird - the website says 'finding our feet' but the cd booklet says 'trying to find our feet' and that's what they sing. I just sing it loudly.

I had no idea what "find our feet" meant. So I asked my friend, and apparently it's an idiom that means becoming used to a new situation. So I suppose that this song is saying that being wise means you have to always be willing to try new things. So my interpretation would be "A lot of people don't know what they want in life because they haven't tried enough things to discover what makes them happy."
