I thought this song is about the longing for someone who is unobtainable. It seems like he wants to be with her and she can't commit or keeps changing her mind and he keeps getting hurt and going back. "That's a frosty way to speak, To tell me how to live next to your potpourri" -maybe she's suggesting that they should remain friends and he doesn't think it's possible to be near her with his strong feelings. I think he wants her even though he knows he shouldn't. He's crying to God to get his sanity back.. He's being played.

[Chorus] Me, I cried out "God" You dared me in the dark [you can tell from first verse that there is a "doubt". dared me in the dark.] I felt a hush fall quietly from my spark [spark often symbolizes god's love or power. a hush fell quietly. continues the doubting theme.] so now I hide in piles of princely orange peels [princely - jesus being the son of god. orange peels - referring to the perfectness of potpouri] [so i hide in piles of it. because i am ashamed to admit that i am human and flawed.] It feels the way you told me how it'd always feel.. [possible sarcasm.]

[a saint who would hold on to his beliefs - to the "name to claim" until death. so his own "name to claim" is now being scraped along the walls. its dieing.] I wish for the same old things that turn me inside out. Keeling in such pain, it's a game! [possibly the way we are addicted to things that cause us pain. its an explanation for why he hangs on to religion but acknowledges that its bad for him. like drugs. we know its bad but its hard to stop.
