I'm not going to tackle the entire song. It is far too dense. I'm going try my hand at the verse that I've found most perplexing, not only in understanding the words (i.e., what is he saying?), but the meanings behind the words as they sound to me.

Upon a closer listen, it sounds to me like:
It would fit with his concerns about the burn of scrutiny: a horse before the race is not fully prepared. One who is not fully prepared for something will feel "the burn of scrutiny."
So, perhaps the comparison is that in some aspect of his life, he feels like that horse, unprepared, naked, and therefore subject to the burn of scrutiny.
are you not sure it's "swing aside against me" - you know when you and someone else get on a swing and you swing in opposite directions. Sure seems the direction of the song, plus scythe isn't pronounced like that as far as I can tell.
It's definitely "Scythe." And yes, it is pronounced exactly like that. It rhymes with "tithe" and "blithe." Same vowel sound as in "Strive." It's a weapon you can swing at someone to cut them in half.

I just listened to it like 12 times, and honestly I find "aside" and "a scythe" equally possible. And both make sense. But I like the imagery of "swing aside" better, so I'm gonna sing it that way :]

I do think it's scythe, but I like the idea of "swing aside against me" cause it evokes the imagery of childhoos, swinging alongside somebody on a swingset was called 'being married'. Anyone else remember that? Which fits into the whole "who will I mate with?" part. Haha it fits, abstractly, even if it's wrong :)

The scythe line refers to death and the image of death as the Grim Reaper. He's asking when will he die? When will the reaper come for him with his scythe?
