Once in a while I act like a child
To feel like a kid again
It feels like a prison
In the body you’re living in
Because everyone’s watching
Greedy to start talking
I’m losing my innocence
Wish I weren’t a little girl
Who felt the weight of the world
It would be nice to start over again
Before we were men
I’d give, I'd bend
Let’s play pretend
Remember the times
We had soda for wine
And got by on gratitude
The worst they could do to you
Was check your attitude
Yeah, when fights were for fun
We had water for guns
And a place we could call our own
How we lost hold of that
I guess I’ll never know
It would be nice to start over again
Before we were men
I’d give, I'd bend
Let’s play pretend
And when it’s the end
Our lives will make sense
And love, even
We won’t have to play pretend
To feel like a kid again
It feels like a prison
In the body you’re living in
Greedy to start talking
I’m losing my innocence
Wish I weren’t a little girl
Who felt the weight of the world
Before we were men
I’d give, I'd bend
Let’s play pretend
We had soda for wine
And got by on gratitude
The worst they could do to you
Was check your attitude
We had water for guns
And a place we could call our own
How we lost hold of that
I guess I’ll never know
Before we were men
I’d give, I'd bend
Let’s play pretend
Our lives will make sense
And love, even
We won’t have to play pretend

beautiful song, clear meaning... growing up and missing childhood, but from a refined perspective...very clear, sobering, and honest lyrics and the music really touches you. especially the ding-ding-ding, sparkly noise... totally reminds me of the magic of being a little kid.
"it's not gonna be long before we're all gone, with nothing to show for them stop taking lives, come on, let's all grow up again"

She saying that she was a little girl again, and that she wish he was too, so they could go back to where it didnt matter about relationships, heartbreak, and troubles of the world. Before we realized love. Before we grew up and we changed. Can we go back to how it used to be. And i think the correct lyrics would be "Before you were a man."
amazing song....extremely touching song...one of my favorites <3 <3 :)
This song is amazing, can relate. I love it!
CORRECT LYRICS!!!!! AS WELL AS TRANSLATION.
Once in a while I act like a child To feel like a kid again It gets like a prison In the body I'm living in
[[[ In this stanza she introduces her yearning to be like a child again. She relates her body to like a prison, because she feels like there is a child inside of a body that is an adult. She doesn't feel like she is in the right place and it's like a prison because of all the social rules of being an "adult" and that she just wants to get free from that and express her child self fully. ]]]
'Cause everyone’s watching; Quick to start talking; I’m losing my innocence Wish I were a little girl Without the weight of the world
[[[The first two lines of this stanza support the inference I noted above. It is like a prison because she knows that people will be quick to start talking if she acted like a child again and would judge her, so the child in her just stays dormant around others. The "i'm losing my innocence" line also shows how she is getting older and older and being exposed to more adult things and learning to have responsibilities etc...She's learning the ropes of the harsh reality of life and then in the next lines she expresses her yearning to just be like a little girl again without all the responsibilities of being an adult.]]]]
CHORUS: It would be nice to start over again Before we were men I’d give, I'd bend Let’s play pretend
[[[ "Men" in the second line is the symbol in this song for an adult. She would do anything to go back, to "start over" to when she was a kid again. She said "she'd give" and "she'd bend" saying she would do pretty much anything just to go back to those easy days. Though it is impossible, and she probably knows this underneath this. So she says "let's play pretend." This is the most meaningful line in the whole song. It has a double-meaning and is the ultimate theme. "Let's play pretend" is something a kid would say, and "pretend" is a game that kids usually like to play. So it gives the illusion like she is acting like a kid. But it also references to how she just wants to escape being an adult so bad and be like a kid again that she is suggesting, let's just play pretend and act like a kid again. So it relates to both themes in the song. ]]]
Remember the time We had soda for wine We got by on gratitude The worst they could do to you Was check your attitude
[[[ She relates soda and wine, soda being something that a kid would drink, is full of sugar, and is just lighthearted in general. On the contrary, wine is quite the opposite. It is very mature and is strong tasting with a bitter taste and gets hard to get used to. Relates the maturity of an adult and the lightheartedness of being a kid. The last lines relate to what the worst could happen to you when you were a kid was your attitude being checked, most likely from your parent(s). When you are an adult, the worst that can happen to you is much more dire and serious...For example, you can be accused of adult crimes etc, and you are more vulnerable to getting hurt, etc.. While when you were a kid you were under the safety of your home/parents etc..]]]
Yeah, when fights were for fun We had water in guns And a place we could call our own How we lost hold of home, I guess I’ll never know
[[[ One of my favorite lines ever is the first two lines in this stanza. It also gives the scary contrast between water guns and real guns. Also showing the comparison to the hard cold reality that you meet when you are an adult and the fun, laughter, and games when you are a kid. She says a "place we could call our own" which shows how when you are a kid and under the shelter of your guardians, you have one destination and one destination only that is your home( for most anyway.) But that feeling of always having a stable, consistent place to stay at is lost when we go off on our own. We always are changing homes in the future...we are moving along and we are changing ourselves. The "home" not only shows the physical and symbolic representation of your home but also a state within yourself where you feel safety and consistency. You are forced to step out of your comfort zone when you are an adult. She shows confusion by saying she guesses she'll never know how we lost hold of home because it is something that happens so suddenly.]]]
----CHORUS----
And when it’s the end Our lives will make sense We'll love, we'll bend (?) Let's play pretend
[[[ She gives reassurance as to "the end." She is most likely referring to the end of our lives and that at the end everything will make sense and she'll understand the reasons why what happens is what happens.]]]
It's not gonna be long Before we're all gone With nothing to show for them Stop taking lives, come on Let's all grow up again
[[[ In the first two lines it shows how life goes by so quickly. ]]]
---CHORUS----
And when it's the end, Our lives will make sense We'll love, we'll bend, Let's play pretend
Overall, this song revolves around nostalgia of going back to being a kid while you're an adult. You don't have to be physically, or legally an adult to understand what an adult feels like in this song, you could feel emotionally like an adult and reminisce on the times when it was easier etc. It makes you want to go back to those easy times...when you had no responsibilities and when life was one big game. There were fantasy stories of princes and princesses, there was lots and lots of fun and someone to take care of you and clean up after you in the end. It was really a time that is understandable to miss, no matter where you come from. I'm sure we'd all like to play pretend again.
