Never Be Ready Lyrics

We got our feet on the wire
Talking 'bout flying
Maybe we're diving in over our heads
Scared of what I'm feeling
Staring at the ceiling
Here tonight

Come on and lay down these arms
All our best defenses
We're taking our chances here on the run
The fear is an anchor
Time is a stranger
Love isn't borrowed
We aren't promised tomorrow

We'll never be ready if we keep waiting
For the perfect time to come
Hold me steady, we'll never be ready
When we don't know, though we can't see
Just walk on down this road with me
Hold me steady, we'll never be ready

You're OK here with me
Here in the silence
With all of the violence crashing around
Saying we can't go
Saying we don't know
This road that is narrow is the one we should follow

We'll never be ready if we keep waiting
For the perfect time to come
Hold me steady, we'll never be ready
When we don't know, though we can't see
Just walk on down this road with me
Hold me steady, we'll never be ready

Steady my hands this one could turn around
Steady my heart, it's beating faster
Steady my hands this one could turn around
Steady my heart, it's beating faster
Beating faster now

We'll never be ready if we keep waiting
For the perfect time to come
Hold me steady, we'll never be ready
When we don't know, though we can't see
Just walk on down this road with me
Hold me steady, never be ready

Hold me steady, we'll never be ready
Hold me steady, we'll never be ready
Hold me steady, we'll never be ready

I think this song can be about a girl who isn't ready to commit, and he's talking about how there's no time like today. And fear can be an anchor that makes you paralyzed and move nowhere in life. And ultimately it's only the fear we create in our minds that really holds us back in life.

It can also be about a guy talking to a girl about jumping in and committing to God. And he says, "You're okay, you're with me," saying that he'll help her along the way. And the road is narrow but they should follow, and they'll do it together. I don't know. Those are my thoughts.

My Interpretation

this song is about a guy who is not sure whether he is ready to commit to a(nother) girl. he's seeing her, and having fun with her, but he's not sure yet whether he wants to "dive in." this song is his reminder to himself that life is short, time is precious, we aren't promised tomorrow, and that he's gotta just give it a chance, otherwise he'll never be ready for a relationship and he'll waste the remained of his precious time worrying and alone.

i personally love this song. it's my favorite off the album. for some reason, though, i feel like mat doesn't seem that proud of it. on his website, he has a track-by-track description of the record, but he leaves out this song, while talking about all the others. i haven't yet heard him play it live, either. it's too bad because it's an amazing song.

i was hoping that maybe it was for the opposite reason that he skipped over it--maybe it's too personal for him to talk about or play live.

From my perspective, it seems like they are in a relationship talking about a bigger commitment. I think it could be about marriage. Either that or just committing to each other.

I relate to these lines: "We'll never be ready if we keep waiting For the perfect time to come Hold me steady, we'll never be ready When we don't know, though we can't see Just walk on down this road with me Hold me steady, never be ready"

In my relationship, being ready to get married has been a struggle. We'll never be ready, let's just walk down this road together.

Song Meaning

i absolutely adore this song. it's got sort of a double meaning for me. 1) I'm right on the verge of a new relationship. So this song is sort of like "come on...it's worth just going after it. just make the move & go for it." 2) My senior year anthem. Just because...you have to move on to life after high school. Which is difficult but...you've gotta do it.

It's either about 2 things...

  1. Mat wants to further a relationship and the girl is scared... or...
  2. He's trying to bring a friend to Christ or it's partially written from God's perspective

I personally think it's number 2 because of a few lines: "This road that is narrow is the one we should follow" "When we don't know, though we can't see"

This one sounds like it's from God's perspective... I wouldn't say this to my girlfriend to be honest... "You're OK here with me Here in the silence With all of the violence crashing around"

So, it's a simple song and it's open ended. It can be about either one.

Alright I will help a lot of people out here too. Straight from Mat himself, and there really is sort of a broad but great meaning behind the song that sounds really personal to him.
