Runaway Car Lyrics

Stop this runaway car
I want to get off, I want to go back
If I left you there then I left it all behind

'Cause all I'm feeling now
Is the weight of the world bearing down
I don't have answers for any of my questions anymore

'Cause I might have been wrong
I might have been scared, all alone
I might have been standing on the top of the world
What a difference a day makes
I turned and watched you walk away
I might have been standing on the top of the world
'Cause I might have been wrong

Tail lights and a seat on the right
And a losing fight, into the night
Oh all the wild horses running down my veins

It's one word and the softest eyes
You say you'll wait and I go hide
If you're still there then you're still all I want

Because I might have been wrong
I might have been scared, all alone
I might have been standing on the top of the world
What a difference a day makes
I turned and watched you walk away
I might have been standing on the top of the world
'Cause I might have been wrong

I might have been wrong
Might have been wrong
Might have been
Might have been

Stop this runaway car
If we're not that gone and we're not that far
If I left you there then I left it all behind

'Cause I might have been wrong
I might have been scared, all alone
I might have been standing on the top of the world
What a difference a day makes
I turned and watched you walk away
I might have been standing on the top of the world
'Cause I might have been wrong

I might have been wrong
Might have been wrong
Might have been
Might have been
Might have been wrong

Cover art for Runaway Car lyrics by Mat Kearney

In a recent interview, Mat Kearney was asked about Runaway Car:

"Runaway Car was, was one of the first songs I started playing. We... It started in the studio and it was just me and Robert playing all the instruments, and playing the guitar, and I think I'm hitting a set of bells with a screwdriver, if you listen that's the E-Street, kind of high frequency that's happening in the song, but umm. I started writing that in the House of Blues in Los Angeles and, this, this idea of regret and wanting to change. And some people say, you know, 'I have no regrets,' and I probably, don't... I definitely have regrets and I feel like having those regrets can be the things that push you into not wanting to walk down a path that maybe hurt you, or has hurt someone, you know, in the past, so. It's kind of dealing with all of those things and this desiring to get off of this motion that's headed in the wrong way and wanting to, kind of, 'Why do I do the things I don't want to do?' It's dealing with those ideas. It's also deing with scared of falling in love, and the stupid things that you do if you're scared to fall in love."

Whoops the last line should be "It's also dealing with being scared of falling in love, and... the stupid things that you do if you're scared to fall in love."

I think this is the most raw song on the album and sums up a lot of the themes... Mat said in an interview, "It's also dealing with being scared of falling in love." and that's exactly what I got out of the song. It's definitely a song that resonates with me and did the second I heard it. The line, "If I left you there than I left it all behind" is a wonderful line expressing Mat's emotions and was one of the best lines of the album.
