Fire & Rain Lyrics
I heard you were back in town
I heard you were coming 'round
Trying to get off the ground
From every road you went down
I walked down to your street
Could still feel the old heat
If you're burning on empty
I'll be holding a golden ring
'Cause hey hey, they don't know you like I do
I'd wait, for the whole world to show you
Maybe we're not, not that gone
Do you ever think about me?
Do you ever call my name?
Ask me now I'll give you the reasons
My love will not fade
Through the fire and rain
The fire and rain
I'll meet you half-way
If you're coming the long way
Don't care what the people say
Of the prodigal runaway
'Cause hey hey, they don't know you like I do
I'd wait, for the whole world to show you
Maybe we're not, not that gone
Do you ever think about me?
Do you ever call my name?
Ask me now I'll give you the reasons
My love will not fade
Through the fire and rain
The fire and rain
You said goodbye, I'm gone
Oh it hurts to hold on
If you settled your score (And you know and you know)
Pick you up off the floor
Do you ever think about me?
Do you ever call my name?
Ask me now I'll give you the reasons
My love...
Do you ever think about me?
Do you ever call my name?
Ask me now I'll give you the reasons
My love will not fade
Through the fire and rain
The fire and rain

Mat Kearney was recently interviewed about the new City of Black and White album:
"Fire and Rain is also one of the last songs we wrote and, I don't know, that song is definitely dealing with this kind of like, prodigal friend or something. There's like this sense of distance and you wanting to experience some sort of redemption and cover that distance and maybe bring together friendship or love or something that has fallen apart. 'I heard you were back in town,' 'I heard you were comin' around,' and that's the lyric there, you're desiring to be back in that relationship I guess."
I don't usually try to make songs sound more Christian then they are but I have a feeling it's based off the prodigal son, in Luke. I don't know if it's a direct reference to it but it definitely has themes based off of it. It can be about a girlfriend, friend, family member, or anything you want it to be. Not sure what Mat had in mind when he wrote it though.
it's not like Christians to fixate on one bit of information and ignore all other facts that don't suit them. He mentions the prodigal, but there are no other parallels with the story - no two brothers, no return seeking forgiveness, no father/benefactor figure, no wasting of a fortune. The only similarity is the word prodigal and the fact they've been away and returned. Lines like 'golden ring' implies a wedding ring, 'they don't know you like I do' implies that someone has not changed like in the prodigal son, but that they are misunderstood ....

@latexwarrior What you said about the golden ring line not fitting the prodigal son story: Luke 15: 21-22: "The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.'" No return seeking forgiveness? "Heard you were back in town, heard you were coming 'round." (return) and "my love never fades through the fire and rain" (forgiveness). And BTW Mat...

And BTW Mat Kearney even said it was about the prodigal son.
I think it's about a girl who left a guy to go discover herself in this world, and he's saying that he's never stopped loving her, and that no matter where she's gone, no one knows her like he does. And even though she's hurt him, being prodigal, he feels they're "not that gone", and he still loves her
